Then the Apprentice Operating Department Practitioner role could be for you. An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Theatres and Anaesthesia CSU. We are looking for someone who is passionate about delivering high quality, patient-centred care to patients throughout their perioperative journey. This is an apprenticeship where you will have the opportunity to earn while you learn throughout the duration of the programme. You will be employed in a three-year Apprentice Operating Department Practitioner role on a fixed term contract at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust and undertake your academic studies at our Higher Education Institute University of Huddersfield.

Main duties of the job

The Apprentice Operating Department Practitioner course is a three-year education programme, working towards becoming a registered Operating Department Practitioner with a BSc Hons degree. The course combines work-based and academic learning between LTHT and an approved Higher Education Institute (HEI). As an Apprentice Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) you will be based, as a paid employee, within LTHT. Whilst you will be allocated to one specific home team, you will experience placements in various clinical areas across the CSU, allowing you to gain skills and knowledge in different specialty areas. You will be required to achieve the standards set out by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), HEI and the Institute of Apprenticeships. On completion of the three-year programme you will be able to apply to join the register as an Operating Department Practitioner.

During the education programme you will develop skills and knowledge that will allow you to work in within a dynamic and challenging healthcare environment.

To be eligible to apply you must be able to evidence that you:
  • Meet the criteria outlined within the personal specification.
  • Are 18 years old or over.
  • Are able to fulfil Occupational Health requirements for the post (with reasonable adjustments if necessary).
  • Have lived in the UK for a continuous 3-year period prior to start of the programme.
  • Have a valid visa for the full length of the apprenticeship until September 2029.

Job responsibilities

As part of the apprenticeship, you will be required to:

  • Deliver high quality, compassionate care under the direction of a Registered Nurse/Operating Department Practitioner (or other registered healthcare professional) with a focus on promoting patient health and independence.
  • Successfully complete and pass the academic elements of the programme as specified by the Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust (LTHT), HEI and Institute of Apprenticeship standards. You will also be required to complete an apprentice portfolio that demonstrates learning and skills and complete an end point assessment.
  • Successfully complete the Operating Department Practitioner competencies related to HCPC standards as specified by the Trust and the University.
  • Have sound attitudes and behaviours compatible with NHS Values and LTHT values as set out in The Leeds Way.
  • Work as part of a designated clinical care team delivering care that focuses on the direct needs of the patient.
  • Work with a mentor, taking responsibility for developing your own competence while on placements and attending academic study; maintaining evidence of your learning.
  • Adhere to the policies and procedures required as an employee of LTHT.
  • Demonstrate a flexible and dynamic attitude, both to your paid work and academic studies.

  • Able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Basic IT skills.
  • Able to fulfil Occupational Health requirements for the post (with reasonable adjustments if necessary).

Qualifications
  • GCSE English Language or English Literature and Maths at grade 4 or above, or grade C or above if awarded under the previous GCSE grading scheme, or Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English or eBCC at A level (104 UCAS Points) from a combination of Level 3 qualifications (we do not accept general studies or AS levels).
  • MMM in BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma / Merit at T Level / Access to Higher Education Diploma with 45 Level 3 credits, 15 at Distinction, and 30 at Merit.
  • NCFE CACHE Technical Level 3 Extended Diploma/Level 3 Extended Diploma at grade C / Other qualification (equivalent or higher education).

If your first language is not English, you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum for IELTS is 6.5 overall with no element lower than 6.0, or equivalent.
