Job Summary
We are advertising a post with the aim of enhancing established services at our trust within acute medicine. The purpose of this post is to provide a clinical service within the Divisions of Medicine and Emergency & Acute Medicine to patients of the Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS FT (DBTH). In addition to this, the applicant will occupy a position within the nationally renowned Mexborough Montagu clinical simulation centre.
The Post Holder Will Be Expected To:
- Provide an acute medicine service to the patients of DBTH, with anticipation that acute medicine work will be undertaken at both Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Bassetlaw Hospital.
- Collaborate with colleagues to deliver a high quality, timely service and to work towards meeting the Trust’s and departmental objectives.
- Participate in the Acute Medicine on-call rota to ensure that both emergency and urgent services are provided out of normal hours, to be shared equally with Consultant colleagues in post. The Acute Medicine rota does not include overnight cover; however, there is a late shift until 9pm every week and 1:8 weekends with 10-hour shifts. Whilst undertaking on-call duties, attend the hospital site to review patients when clinically necessary.
Main Duties of the Job
- Participate in general medicine ward rounds and MDTs.
- Develop working policies with relevant hospital services and departments, local General Practitioners, nursing teams, and the wider multi-disciplinary teams.
- Develop innovative practices in clinical patient management, focusing on high quality care and emphasis on links between emergency and acute medicine.
- Share with colleagues the responsibility for teaching and training of trainees, junior medical staff, nursing staff, primary care colleagues, and medical students.
- Ensure active participation in continuing professional development (CPD).
- Deliver high fidelity simulation to medical students, foundation doctors, and medical trainees of both stages of internal medicine training.
- Contribute to the review and update of existing simulation courses and the development of new courses.

Job Responsibilities
Under the terms of the new consultant contract (2003), the basic full-time Job Plan contains ten Programmed Activities (PAs) of 4 hours each. The 10 PA allocation will be a mixture of DCC, clinical simulation, and SPA. All full-time posts will be offered a minimum of 1.5 SPAs up to a maximum of 2.5 SPAs depending upon the requirements of the role. There will be two protected PAs (equating to one day per week) in clinical simulation to be taken in Mexborough Montagu Clinical Simulation Centre.
Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
- MRCP or equivalent
- You must be on the specialist register for Acute Medicine or General Medicine or within 6 months of being admitted to the register for trainees, if currently in a training programme in the UK.
- Applicants must continue to hold a Licence to Practise
- Ultrasound Level 1 (FAMUS)
Experience and Achievements Essential
- Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of Acute Medicine and General Medicine
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinions on a range of problems within the specialty
- Shows ability to work with and lead others across professions
Teaching and Training Essential
- Experience of and enthusiasm for clinical teaching of postgraduate doctors and other healthcare professionals.
Audit and Research Essential
- Knowledge of Audit principles and evidence of participation in and completion of audit projects and the implementation of outcomes.
Practical/Intellectual Skills/Personal Qualities Essential
- Ability to use IT Systems – including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Evidence of innovation
