NHS England North East and Yorkshire Region are keen to recruit enthusiastic and highly motivated medical appraisers, to enhance our cohort to support our diverse GP workforce across the North East and Yorkshire region.

Appraisal continues to be the catalyst of professional development and across our region we are passionate that appraisal must be both a positive experience and valuable to the doctor. The appraisal guidance continues with the core emphasis on well-being, support and professional development, with a focus on challenges and achievements over the past year and professional development planning for the coming year.

We are looking for medical appraisers who have the ability to deliver medical appraisal with compassion, to listen with fascination, to encourage with enthusiasm, and to affirm with confidence. If this describes you, we are keen to hear from you.

We would expect that you have had a minimum of 3 medical appraisals since qualifying as a GP. Medical appraisers provide the service through a consultancy agreement basis and there is an expectation to undertake between 5 -20 appraisals per year. Remuneration for the service is Β£584 per appraisal and is eligible for the NHS pension scheme if you remain included in the medical performers list.

We offer full training including a pre-training workbook (1 day of protected time required) and 1 day appraiser training course, to be provided in a face-to-face environment, at a central location in York or Leeds. Various dates will be held in February, June or October 2026 (Date/time/Venue TBC).

There are regular NHS England Appraisal Networks run throughout the year to support keeping up to date and your ongoing development.

Shortlisting will be based upon expressions of interest, and a place on the medical appraiser training offered to successful applicants, who will be notified by email. Please note applications may close early should a large number of applicants apply.
