About the Role

Are you passionate about re-engaging young people through English and helping them rediscover confidence in learning? Leeds City College are seeking a committed and creative English Teacher to join our 14–16 Skills Programme, supporting learners who have become disengaged from mainstream education. This is a unique opportunity to work within a specialist department delivering alternative education to school-aged learners. You will play a key role in delivering an engaging and accessible Functional Skills and GCSE English curriculum, developing learners’ literacy, communication, and exam skills to support both academic progress and personal development. Working closely with a multidisciplinary team, you will build positive relationships with learners, families, and external professionals, using a trauma informed, relational, and inclusive approach to remove barriers to learning. You will support learners to re-engage, achieve recognised qualifications, and develop the confidence and skills needed for sustained participation in education and training.

What You Will Do

  • Plan, prepare and develop schemes of work, session plans, teaching and learning resources, learning and assessment plans.
  • Deliver and assess essential knowledge and understanding to learners.
  • Motivate and inspire students to achieve targets and develop their skills to enable progression.
  • Develop and strengthen relationships with learners and provide support to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Use and promote restorative practice approaches.

About You

  • Holds a L5 Teaching Qualification (eg. Cert Ed, PGCE).
  • Relevant highest level vocational qualification or degree in teaching subject.
  • Relevant up to date subject knowledge and recent delivery in the Further Education or preferably school sector.
  • Experience of setting appropriate SMART targets to ensure progression of learners.
  • Appropriate training and/or a willingness to undertake training in supporting the needs of disengaged/disadvantaged students who may have emotional and behavioural needs.
  • Experience of working with disengaged/disadvantaged young people in an educational setting.
  • Ability to inspire and motivate learners to achieve their full potential.
