Leeds City College are seeking a Teacher of Design Realisation to join our Creative Arts department, based at Quarry Hill. This role is to deliver design realisation modules (props, scenic construction and painting) to students across a series of programmes, developing students' ability to prepare for and realise the design aspects of a production. There is a strong focus on developing the learners' practical and creative skills, and their communication and employability skills, helping them to grow as people to support their journey towards employment. All staff are involved in devising the curriculum in response to academic demands and industry needs, as well as delivering and assessing modules.

The growing Backstage Production team at Leeds City College and the University Centre Leeds deliver a series of qualifications for school leavers to mature students on our new degree in Production Arts. We deliver practical creative programmes to prepare students to enter the backstage industries. We work closely as a team with a strong emphasis on mutual support. All staff are dedicated to the continuing evolution of the curriculum and have active personal practices to keep themselves up to date on developments in the worlds of education and industry.

Please note that this is a part-time position, requiring 22.5 hours per week over three working days. The pro rata'd salary is £19,408 with progression to £21,838.

What You Will Do

  • Contribute to high standards of aspirational teaching, learning, and assessment.
  • Prepare for and deliver inspirational classes to student groups, with clear intentions and well-defined outcomes.
  • Enthuse, motivate, and mentor the young backstage workforce of the future, fostering a true passion for the live industry.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of learner progress, attendance, and achievements within the College.
  • Bring drive, determination, and a desire to make a genuine difference to young people's lives through education.
  • Take part in activities relating to recruitment of students (open evenings, interviews etc).
  • Be an active member of staff teams, contributing to curriculum development, course reviews and School of Creative Arts activities.
  • Participate in personal development, working to develop your own professional knowledge and skill set.

About You

  • Graduate qualification in an appropriate subject area or significant industry experience.
  • Industry experience of working in theatre.
  • A creative, enthusiastic, dynamic and forward-thinking practitioner.
  • Work well as part of a team and be resilient, adaptable, and enthusiastic with experience of the backstage industries.
  • Student focused, building a supportive and creative environment for students to develop their practical skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and would be happy working with people as well as being able to work independently when required.
  • Competent on EOS family consoles, Qlab and knowledgeable of safe working practices in the production arts industry.
