Leeds City College are seeking an Academic Intervention Lead with a specialism in English to join our Future Pathways Department. This unique role offers the best of both worlds: leading a core subject while also supporting students across a whole department. You will take the lead on planning and teaching our Functional Skills English curriculum, ensuring high‑needs learners build essential literacy skills. In addition, you will act as our cross‑curriculum academic intervention specialist, stepping in to provide targeted support across Maths, vocational modules, and RARPA pathways. With creative freedom to turn statutory targets into life‑changing academic and independence milestones, you will help every student, including those with EHCPs, achieve their full potential.
What you will do:
- Take overall responsibility for the planning, delivery and quality assurance of Entry Level Functional Skills English.
- Design and deliver targeted academic interventions across all departmental programmes, supporting students with Maths, vocational studies and RARPA targets.
- Carry out robust initial and diagnostic assessments to pinpoint why a student is struggling and create bespoke SMART action plans.
- Monitor and record student growth across all interventions, writing professional progress reports that inform statutory EHCP annual reviews.
- Undertake internal verification, standardisation and course review processes to ensure full compliance with college quality frameworks and exam board specifications.
About you:
- You hold a recognised UK teaching qualification at Level 5 or above (e.g. PGCE or Cert Ed) alongside Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths.
- You have a proven track record of successfully teaching Functional Skills English within further education or a specialist SEND setting, and the ability to support broader subjects like Maths and vocational modules.
- You possess a strong working knowledge of the UK SEND Code of Practice, EHCP statutory outcomes and the practical application of the RARPA framework for non‑accredited growth.
- You can pivot your teaching style responsively to meet the diverse communication, neurodivergent and behavioural needs of high‑needs learners in real time.
- You bring high levels of emotional intelligence, patience and a calm demeanour under pressure, backed by excellent communication skills needed to work with parents, tutors and multi‑agency specialists.
