Teacher in Charge of the Lighthouse (Deaf Provision) in Guildford

Guildford Grove Primary School is seeking to appoint a Teacher in Charge of the Lighthouse, to lead and develop high-quality teaching and learning for our deaf pupils in our Specialist Centre for Deaf Children.

The Lighthouse offers deaf children and their families highly specialised educational provision in the inclusive mainstream school setting of Guildford Grove. As Teacher in Charge of the Lighthouse, you will play a key role in working closely with staff, families and external professionals, along with helping to shape the delivery of our deaf provision across the school, as part of the school’s leadership team.

Responsibilities will include:

• Leading the strategic development of The Lighthouse through annual planning, target setting, action plan coordination, and liaison with Surrey and external review bodies to ensure continuous improvement and high-quality provision for deaf pupils.
• Building and maintaining strong professional partnerships; working with specialist services and external agencies, coordinating referrals, collaborating with professionals to support deaf children and their families and supporting and championing the deaf community within school and the deaf community.
• Overseeing and coordinating pupil support to meet changing needs and ensure positive outcomes; leading annual review meetings, setting targets, planning and delivering provision, assessing progress, liaising with families and external agencies and adhering to statutory requirements.
• Developing positive and supportive relationships with families through regular communication, consultations, school tours, and opportunities for training, advice, and community engagement.
• Delivering, and supporting other teachers of the deaf to plan and deliver high-quality teaching and curriculum for the Lighthouse pupils; ensuring that pupils meet their personal EHCP targets and make expected progress in their learning.
• Leading, supporting and motivating the Lighthouse team; providing training and supervision, communicating effectively, monitoring practice, managing resources and creating a cohesive team of hearing and deaf staff.
• Championing deaf awareness and effective provision within the mainstream school community; ensuring inclusion of deaf pupils and staff in the opportunities available in the mainstream school and advising mainstream staff on inclusive practice and effective strategies to promote learning, communication, and achievement.
• Promoting a positive, inclusive, and respectful school culture, contributing to safeguarding and pupil wellbeing, and demonstrating a strong commitment to professional development and continuous improvement.

We are looking for someone who:

• Is educated to degree level with qualified teacher of the deaf status
• Holds Level 3 British Sign Language (BSL) or currently working towards level 3
• Has experience in working with deaf children and adults
• Has experience of leading a team and can inspire and support colleagues within the provision
• Can plan and deliver the curriculum
• Is committed to inclusive practice and removing barriers to learning
• Works effectively as part of a team
