TxDOT MNT Regional Transportation Technician I, II, or III travels with regional crews throughout the state to perform routine to highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work including roadway maintenance and repair, equipment operation, traffic control, and assisting the public during emergency situations. These roles require extensive travel and contact with private entities. Employees at these levels follow standard practices with varying levels of independence.
Essential Duties
- MNT Regional Transp Tech I: Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic. Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards. Operates light equipment (examples include front-end loader, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, mower). Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment; completes reports (time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, PMI). Supports emergency operations (e.g., floods, storms, accidents, hazardous material spills) by sanding/cleaning, posting signs, aiding the public, and performing other duties as directed. Maintains highways and rights-of-way; conducts roadway repairs; performs highway striping operations; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
- MNT Regional Transp Tech II: All duties of Tech I, plus assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement for compliance with specifications, safety laws, regulations, and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Operates heavier equipment (e.g., larger loaders, tractor-trailer haul trucks, large draglines, shovels, paint strippers, dump trucks). Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
- MNT Regional Transp Tech III: All duties of Tech II, plus acts as a work crew project lead ensuring work meets project specifications. Trains other employees. Operates complex heavy equipment (e.g., motor graders, large excavators, heavy bulldozers, cranes, herbicide trucks, heavy asphalt paving machines, self-propelled asphalt distributors, profiling/milling machines). Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: No formal education required.
- Experience: Tech I: No experience required. Tech II: 1 year transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. Tech III: 2 years transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent)
- Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license required for driving a state vehicle. Tech I must have a Class "A" CDL or obtain one within 120 calendar days from date of employment. Tech II/III must have a Class "A" CDL at time of hire.

- MNT Regional Transp Tech I: Methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance. Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance. The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Maintenance concepts, methods, policies and requirements. Applicable safety standards, guidelines and specification codes. Using hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade. Using light and heavy highway equipment. Maintaining safe working relationships. Communicate effectively. Follow verbal and written instructions.
- MNT Regional Transp Tech II: All of the above plus applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques. Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures.
- MNT Regional Transp Tech III: All of the above plus using basic mathematical fundamentals. Prioritizing and organizing work assignments.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Subject to extreme cold and heat; exposure to noise, vibration, hazards (moving vehicles, high places, chemicals).
- Subject to atmospheric conditions (fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation).
- Medium work: lift up to 50 lbs; frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
- Kneeling, bending, crouching; lifting objects between positions.

Position Information
Travel statewide to support Maintenance Specialty Crews as a Regional Transportation Tech. Extensive weekly travel is required with a 3-day weekend. Candidate must live within 140 miles (2 hours) of the Abilene District Headquarters. CDL holders are encouraged to apply. Work Location: 4250 North Clack, Abilene, TX 79601. This job will require 100% overnight travel.
