Main duties of the job

We have an exciting opportunity for a GP Assistant (GPA) to join our proactive care team with a primary focus on undertaking New Patient Health Checks. The post holder will support the delivery of high-quality patient care through a combination of clinical and administrative duties within their scope of practice.

Working as part of the multidisciplinary team, the GP Assistant will undertake comprehensive New Patient Health Checks, collecting baseline health information, reviewing medical history and medications, carrying out routine observations, and identifying current and future health and care needs. The post holder will ensure patients are appropriately signposted, referred, and scheduled for any required long-term condition reviews, screening programmes, immunisations and follow-up care.

The role will include health promotion, patient education, clinical coding, health records management and care coordination, helping to ensure patients receive timely, safe and patient-centred care. Working in accordance with the NHS England GP Assistant Competency Framework, the post holder will contribute to the ongoing delivery and improvement of primary care services.

The successful candidate must be prepared to undertake training forthe GP Assistant Certificate qualification

Job responsibilities

  • Order any required tests.
  • Provide a phlebotomy service where needed.
  • Undertake routine diagnostic tasks such as ECGs, blood pressure checks, routine heights, weights and urinalysis.
  • Undertake New Patient Health Checks in accordance with Practice protocols and within scope of practice.
  • Obtain and record baseline health information, including medical history, family history, lifestyle factors, allergies and routine observations such as height, weight, BMI and blood pressure.
  • Review and reconcile patients' current medications during New Patient Health Checks, identifying discrepancies and escalating any concerns to the appropriate clinician.
  • Identify current and future health and care needs, ensuring patients are signposted or referred to appropriate services where required.
  • Ensure appropriate clinical coding and accurate documentation of all findings, interventions and actions within the patient's electronic health record.
  • Support the identification and management of patients with long-term conditions, ensuring appropriate reviews, monitoring and follow-up appointments are scheduled in line with Practice protocols.
  • Review eligibility for screening programmes, immunisations and preventative health interventions and ensure appropriate action is taken.
  • Use patient contacts as opportunities to promote health education, including education on practice systems such as obtaining blood test results.
  • Provide and support patients with interventions around lifestyle changes.
  • Ensure patients are followed up if they do not attend appointments.
  • Act at all times with regard to the confidentiality and sensitivity of issues relating to patients, their care and treatment.
  • Record and document all patient contact.

Person Specification

Experience

  • Experience of working in a healthcare setting
  • Experience of working with the general public
  • Experience of working in a primary care environment

Clinical Knowledge

  • ECGs
  • New patient medicals, including height, weight, BP, pulse
  • Ability to record accurate clinical notes

Qualifications

  • Healthcare qualification (level 3 or 4) or working towards gaining equivalent level
  • GP Assistant Certificate qualification or working towards the qualification
