Waltham Forest Shared Lives Scheme is currently recruiting individuals to become Shared Lives carers. Anyone can apply; you don’t need formal experience. Note: you will be self‑employed and responsible for your own Tax self‑assessment and National Insurance contributions. You do need to be compassionate and committed to offering meaningful support to adults aged 18 and over who have care and support needs. This may include people with:

  • Learning disabilities
  • Autism and Learning Disability
  • Mental health needs
  • Sensory disabilities
  • Dementia/Older people
  • Support needs after hospital discharge

You will receive:

  • A fee for the accommodation and support you provide starting from £600 per week.
  • Information, training and dedicated support from the Shared Lives Scheme.
  • Special tax arrangements with HMRC known as qualifying care relief and this does not prevent you from working in other employment.
  • Public Liability Insurance paid for by the Shared Lives Scheme.
  • Support to ensure that the matching between you and the individual is right.
  • 28 Days paid respite.

What is required:

  • You will need to have a spare bedroom either owned or rented to accommodate the individual.
  • Live in London Borough of Waltham Forest.
  • Share your home, family and community life and provide care and support to adults with assessed needs to be as independent as possible in a family environment.
  • You can choose to provide care and support by offering weekend or short‑term respite care or provide longer‑term live‑in support, allowing you to offer the care and support alongside existing commitments.
  • You will decide what level of needs you can support.

You will go through an assessment process which includes background checks, interviews, training, and home visits, to ensure you are suitable for the role, and can offer a safe and appropriate environment for caring.
