Camden is listening to everyone, including you. We’re giving a platform to people inside and outside our community. Because we’re not just home to the UK’s fast-growing economy. We’re home to the most important conversations happening today. And we’re making radical social change a reality, so that nobody gets left behind. Here’s where you can help decide a better future for us all.

The role:

We are seeking to recruit Council Tax Officers to deliver a professional, customer focussed and high-quality service whilst maximising revenue through the administration, collection and recovery of the Council Tax/Business Rates. Dealing directly with the public, you will be able to answer correspondence accurately and liaise with tax payers on the telephone. Correspondence will include reviewing exemptions/discounts and administering Council Tax records to assist the Benefit service with assessing Council Tax reduction claims.

You will be required to take responsibility for complex cases that involve sending a comprehensive written response to our residents including complaints and appeals. Telephone calls will be supporting customers with Council Tax arrears at the latter stages of recovery including those at Enforcement Agent stage requiring you to discuss payment plans and liaise with enforcement agents. You will also be required to trace absconders to settle old debts where post has been returned undelivered. Your attendance at the Local Magistrates’ Court will be required periodically, helping negotiate payment arrangements and dealing with attendees’ queries.

Key Requirements:

  • Minimum two years working experience of Council Tax and a good knowledge of all the relevant principles and procedures governing it.
  • Excellent IT and communication skills.
  • Ability to act professionally and communicate patiently but effectively with those in difficulty.
  • Experience of prioritising own workload with minimum supervision and ability to adapt to changing priorities and demands.
  • This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and will require a Basic DBS.
  • IRRV qualified or previous technical experience gained from having worked in a Council Tax customer focused environment.
  • An understanding of and experience of compliance with data protection/sharing and audit/financial standards.
  • Excellent analytical, literacy, and written communication skills with knowledge of IT applications and software.
  • Ability to work flexibly, balancing competing priorities and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to tactfully deal with a wide range of stakeholders both internally and externally, as well as using problem solving skills and initiative to provide a customer focused support service.

What We Offer:

  • 27 days annual leave for new starters, rising to 31 days after 5 years.
  • Flexible working opportunities.
  • Interest free loans.
  • Access to our incredible staff networks.
  • Career development and training.
  • Wellbeing support and activities.

Inclusion and Diversity:

We want Camden Council to be a great place to work and to ensure that our communities are represented across our workforce. A vital part of this is ensuring we are a truly inclusive organisation that encourages diversity in all respects, including diversity of thinking. We particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian and those of Other Ethnicities, LGBT+, disabled and neurodiverse communities to make a real difference to our residents so that equalities and justice remains at the heart of everything we do.
