Founded over 20 years, Lawtech have become a leading principal contractor specialising in cladding remediation. We deliver high-quality, compliant, multi-million-pound cladding repatriations & regeneration contracts throughout Great Britain.

Overall Purpose Of Role
To provide specialist structural engineering expertise in wind loading calculations and temporary works design, assessment, and approval, ensuring safe and compliant temporary structures throughout cladding remediation and construction projects. The role encompasses calculations of the wind loading on structures, and the review of scaffold loads, hoarding designs, and temporary access systems, with particular focus on their interaction with existing buildings and compliance with CDM 2015 regulations.

Foster a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and professional development within the design team, supporting business objectives and client requirements while maintaining the Golden Thread of Information throughout all project phases.

Overall Responsibilities

  • Lead temporary works design verification and approval processes across multiple projects, ensuring compliance with BS 5975 2019, PAS 8812 2016, and relevant British Standards.
  • Champion the Golden Thread of Information, ensuring comprehensive digital documentation and traceability throughout all assigned projects in accordance with Building Safety Act requirements.
  • Maintain professional development and stay current with industry standards and regulations, including emerging guidance on temporary works and Building Safety Regulator Requirements.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and performance management within the Design & Quality function, including mentoring junior engineers, knowledge sharing, and monitoring industry best practices.
  • Appraise, develop, and support direct reports to ensure competency, continuous professional development, and clear understanding of both company and regulatory objectives.
  • Represent temporary works expertise in project, client, and cross-departmental meetings, ensuring clear communication, prompt issue resolution, and alignment with Lawtech's business and safety objectives.
  • Support the department by undertaking ad hoc duties as required and actively contribute towards enhancing performance management within the role of department.

Operational Responsibilities

  • Temporary Works Assessment & Design
  • Scaffold Load Assessment: Review and assess temporary lateral scaffold loads and their structural effects on existing buildings, including analysis of superstructure and substructure impacts using current calculation methods.
  • Structural Impact Evaluation: Assess the effect of scaffolding and temporary works on individual buildings, external grounds, low-level ancillary buildings, and podium roofs of below-ground car parks, considering static and dynamic loading scenarios.
  • Load Distribution Design: Calculate and specify required spreaders, base plates, and load transfer mechanisms to support scaffold standards and construction hoists, ensuring safe load distribution to existing structures and foundations.
  • Hoarding and Welfare Design Review: Review and approve company hoarding designs and site accommodation structural arrangements in accordance with BS 5975 2019, PAS 8812 2016, and relevant wind loading standards BS EN 1991-1-4.
  • Wind Load Calculation: Calculate wind loading applied to buildings in accordance with the latest Eurocodes (BS EN 1991-1-4), including detailed building zone definition.
  • Produce a complete, clearly structured set of wind load calculations for third-party review, Building Control approval, and Building Safety Regulator submissions.
  • Analyse and document the number of elevations considered for all wind load assessments, ensuring all facades and relevant external features are included per project needs.
  • Incorporate analysis for inset/building recesses, architectural projections, and other features impacting wind load behaviour on both permanent and temporary structures.
  • Undertake wind tunnel or desk-based analyses (as appropriate) to account for funnelling effect, local wind acceleration, and complex boundary phenomena.
  • TG20 21 Compliance: Generate and verify TG20 21 compliance sheets using industry-standard software, ensuring scaffold configurations meet "generally recognised standard" requirements under Work at Height Regulations 2005.

Regulatory Compliance and Risk Management

  • CDM 2015 Compliance: Assess and document designer's risk in accordance with CDM Regulations 2015, preparing comprehensive risk assessments, mitigation strategies, and residual risk communications to duty holders.
  • Technical Documentation: Prepare detailed calculations, drawings, and specifications for temporary works installations, maintaining comprehensive records for audit and inspection purposes.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all temporary works designs meet current British Standards, Building Regulations, Building Safety Act requirements, and HSE guidance.
  • Site Support: Provide technical support during installation, inspection, and removal of temporary works, including attendance at critical construction phases and problem resolution.

Project Coordination and Stakeholder Management

  • Facilitate knowledge sharing, promote standardisation, and maintain flexibility for project-specific requirements across the design function.
  • Liaise with clients, consultants, manufacturers, architects, and key stakeholders to deliver efficient, compliant design outcomes.
  • Coordinate with other departments (commercial, health & safety, contracts, procurement) to enhance business processes and project quality.
  • Address project or design-related issues through site visits, project inspections, and evidence-based recommendations for resolution.
  • Organise, chair, and participate in design coordination meetings relevant to temporary works and overall project delivery.
  • Maintain current knowledge of British and European standards, Building Regulations, and safety requirements, ensuring continuous professional development for self and team members.

Skills & Essential Qualifications

  • BEng/MEng in Civil or Structural Engineering

  • Additional professional development courses in temporary works
  • Current CSCS (Black card Professional level)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of BS 5975 2019 Temporary Works Code of Practice
  • Comprehensive knowledge of PAS 8812:2016 Temporary Works Application of European Standards in design
  • Thorough understanding of CDM Regulations 2015 designer duties and risk assessment procedures
  • Proficiency in structural analysis software (STAAD.Pro, SAP2000, Robot)
  • Detailed experience in wind loading calculations for complex building geometries, including facade zone differentiation, funnelling effects, and analysis for Building Control submission.
