Lawsons Bedford is inviting applications for a Yard Operative / Van Driver to join our friendly and hardworking team. As part of the UK’s leading independent supplier of fencing, timber and building materials, you will play an important role in maintaining an efficient yard operation and delivering high-quality service to our trade and retail customers.

Join the Bedford branch as a valued member of the yard and delivery team. In this role you will support yard operations, prepare customer orders, and carry out local deliveries using a company van. The ideal candidate will be reliable, safety conscious, and ready to provide excellent customer service both on-site and at customer locations.

Main Responsibilities
  • Load, secure and unload goods safely and efficiently for customer orders and deliveries, following correct handling and securing procedures.
  • Carry out local deliveries and collections using a company van, ensuring goods arrive on time and in good condition.
  • Assist customers at the yard counter, preparing orders, providing product information and ensuring a helpful, courteous service.
  • Maintain the yard area, including stacking, palletising and organising stock to keep the site tidy and accessible.
  • Carry out daily vehicle checks and basic vehicle maintenance reporting any defects or issues to management.
  • Complete delivery paperwork and digital records accurately, including proof of delivery and stock movement logs.
  • Adhere to company health and safety procedures at all times, including use of PPE and safe manual handling techniques.
  • Support branch colleagues with ad-hoc duties as required, including assisting with deliveries from larger vehicles or yard machine operations where trained.
Essential Skills, Experience and Attributes
  • Valid UK driving licence (Category B) with a good driving record and experience of driving a van in a professional environment.
  • Previous experience in a yard operative, warehouse or delivery role is desirable, ideally within builders merchants or trade supply sector.
  • Good level of physical fitness and ability to carry out manual handling duties safely, including lifting and manoeuvring heavy items.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with customers and colleagues.
  • Reliable, punctual and able to work well as part of a team with a flexible approach to duties.
  • Basic IT skills for completing digital paperwork and familiarisation with stock systems; attention to detail and accurate record keeping.
  • Commitment to following health & safety guidance and company procedures at all times.
Hours, Salary and Benefits
  • Permanent, full-time role.
  • Typical hours are Monday to Friday 07.30 - 17.00, with 1 in 2 Saturday mornings 08.00 - 12.00.
  • Competitive salary dependent on experience (£30,175 - £31,675 per year).
