Role Overview

We are recruiting a Van Driver / HGV Class 2 Relief Driver to join our Peterborough branch. This is an operational, customer-facing role responsible for the safe and timely delivery of materials to customers, supporting yard and branch colleagues, and providing excellent customer service. The role will include driving company vans and providing HGV relief cover as required.

Working hours

Full time permanent position. Typical hours will be Monday to Friday 07.30 - 17.00 with 1 in 2 Saturday mornings working 08.00 - 12.00.

Main Responsibilities

  • Deliver materials to customers in a safe, efficient and professional manner, ensuring goods are handled correctly and arrive in good condition.
  • Provide HGV relief cover when required, operating larger vehicles in line with training and licence entitlement.
  • Load and unload vehicles, securing loads and ensuring correct documentation accompanies deliveries.
  • Provide excellent customer service on-site, answering customer queries and representing the company professionally.
  • Support yard and branch operations including checking stock, assisting with yard housekeeping and vehicle maintenance checks.
  • Complete delivery paperwork accurately and promptly using company systems and handheld devices where applicable.
  • Report any vehicle defects, incidents, near misses or hazards in line with company procedures and promote safe working practices.
  • Work collaboratively with branch colleagues to assist with ad-hoc tasks during quieter periods to ensure smooth branch operation.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Valid UK driving licence appropriate to role (Category B for vans; C/CE for HGV relief role preferred).
  • Previous delivery driving experience desirable, preferably within builders’ merchants, timber, landscaping or related sectors.
  • Customer-focused with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good numeracy and basic IT literacy, comfortable using handheld devices and company systems.
  • Physically able to load/unload materials and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Reliable, punctual and able to work with minimal supervision while following health and safety and company procedures.
  • Previous experience of securing loads and basic vehicle daily checks is desirable.
