Role Overview

We are recruiting an HGV Class 2 Hiab driver to join our New Malden team. This is a field‑based, customer‑facing role responsible for operating an HGV fitted with a Hiab to deliver materials to customers, safely load and unload on site using hydraulic lifting equipment, and represent the branch professionally. The successful candidate will be reliable, safety conscious and committed to delivering an excellent customer service while maintaining vehicle and equipment standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate an HGV Class 2 (Category C) vehicle fitted with a Hiab to deliver and collect materials to customers’ sites, ensuring safe loading, unloading and accurate placement of products.
  • Carry out pre‑ and post‑trip vehicle checks, report defects promptly and ensure all vehicle paperwork is completed accurately.
  • Safely operate the Hiab and any associated lifting attachments in accordance with training and certified procedures; ensure loads are lifted, slung and positioned without risk to people, property or the vehicle.
  • Load and secure vehicle loads in line with statutory and company guidelines, using appropriate load restraint and safe manual handling techniques where required.
  • Deliver high standards of customer service on site, communicating professionally with customers and representing the New Malden branch positively.
  • Maintain accurate delivery records, collect signatures and proof of delivery, and update branch systems with delivery notes and any discrepancies.
  • Work with yard and branch colleagues to co‑ordinate delivery schedules, report late or failed deliveries and assist with route planning as required.
  • Adhere to company health and safety policies, complete required risk assessments, follow safe working procedures and use PPE at all times.
  • Ensure cleanliness and basic maintenance of the vehicle and Hiab equipment, reporting faults and arranging servicing as necessary.

Person Specification

  • Valid UK HGV Class 2 (Category C) driving licence with current Driver Qualification Card (CPC) and digital tachograph card (essential).
  • Valid Hiab/crane operator certification (e.g., Banksman & Hiab or equivalent) and evidence of relevant lifting equipment training (essential).
  • Proven experience operating an HGV with a Hiab or similar hydraulic crane, ideally within builders’ merchants, landscaping or construction sectors.
  • Good knowledge of vehicle safety checks, load security, slinging and safe manual handling techniques.
  • Excellent customer service skills with a professional, courteous approach and clear communication.
  • Able to work independently, manage time effectively and adapt to changing priorities and schedules.
  • Physically fit and able to undertake manual handling and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • IT literate to the extent of using mobile devices for delivery confirmation and basic branch systems.
  • Knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation and a commitment to follow company procedures and training.
  • Team player who works collaboratively with yard, branch and transport colleagues to achieve safe and efficient service delivery.

Working Hours, Salary and Benefits

  • Full‑time, permanent position based at our New Malden branch.
  • Typical contracted hours are Monday to Friday 06.30- 16.00 plus 1 in 2 Saturday mornings 08:00 - 12:00.
  • Competitive annual salary – £42,840.
