We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Mid Level CAD Designer to support our Steels Department at Colney Heath. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with technical expertise in CAD design—particularly in structural steelwork—who is passionate about delivering high-quality technical drawings, collaborating with a dynamic team, and contributing to project success.

Key Responsibilities for a CAD Designer – Steelwork & Technical Drawing
  • Produce accurate 2D and 3D CAD drawings and models for steel structures, fabrications, and components.
  • Liaise closely with the sales, project management, and procurement teams to understand project requirements.
  • Interpret architectural and engineering drawings, specifications, and written instructions for steel fabrication and erection.
  • Revise and update CAD files in line with project and customer requirements, ensuring all technical data complies with relevant industry standards.
  • Participate in design meetings, providing technical input and solutions to optimise steelwork layouts and details.
  • Ensure all drawings and models are appropriately documented and archived in accordance with company processes.
  • Assist with the preparation of material and cutting lists for fabrication and procurement purposes.
  • Support colleagues in the Steels Department with technical queries related to CAD design.
Skills and Experience – CAD Design & Structural Steel Expertise
  • Proficient user of industry-standard CAD software (AutoCAD, Advance Steel, or equivalent).
  • Previous experience producing steelwork or construction-related technical drawings (ideally minimum 2 years).
  • Familiarity with UK construction and steelwork industry standards and best practices.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to delivering accurate work.
  • Clear communicator, able to present technical information to team members and clients.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise and meet deadlines.
  • Collaborative approach and willingness to learn new techniques or software as needed.
Working Hours, Location, and CAD Designer Benefits at Lawsons
  • Location: Colney Heath Steels Department, Tyttenhanger Farm, Coursers Rd, St Albans AL4 0PG.
  • Full-time hours, Monday - Friday 7.00 - 16.00, plus 1 in 3 Saturdays 08.00 - 12.00.
  • Salary range £30,000 - £35,000, dependent on experience and expertise.
