Role Overview
We are recruiting a Loft Driver to join our Colney Heath branch. This is a branch‑based driving role responsible for delivering goods to customers safely and on time, assisting with loading and unloading at branch and customer sites, and supporting the transport and yard teams to maintain smooth branch operations. The successful candidate will be customer‑focussed, safety conscious and reliable, with good route planning skills and the ability to work as part of a busy team.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver building materials and related products to trade and retail customers across the designated delivery area, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Load and unload vehicles safely using manual handling techniques and appropriate equipment; assist branch colleagues with preparing loads and securing items for transport.
- Complete delivery paperwork, obtain customer signatures, record any discrepancies or damage and report issues to the transport supervisor.
- Provide excellent customer service at point of delivery, representing Lawsons professionally and assisting customers with locating products where required.
- Carry out daily vehicle checks and basic vehicle maintenance routines, reporting defects or service requirements promptly to transport management.
- Adhere to company health and safety policies, use appropriate PPE, follow safe driving and manual handling procedures and complete required risk assessments.
- Support the yard team during quieter driving periods or busy branch times by assisting with loading, stock checks and maintaining a tidy yard.
- Follow planned routes efficiently and communicate any delays or changes to the branch and customers as required.
Person Specification
- Valid UK driving licence appropriate to the vehicle type (Cat B and/or Cat C1 where required) with a clean driving record; CPC entitlement and digital tachograph card where applicable.
- HIAB / Lorry Loader Crane Certificate (often RTITB or ALLMI accredited).
- HGV Class 2 (Category C) licence.
- Previous experience in Loft delivery driving, ideally within builders’ merchants, builders’ supplies or similar industries.
- Good practical knowledge of safe manual handling practices and the ability to load and unload heavy materials safely.
- Customer‑focussed with strong communication skills and a professional, courteous manner when representing the branch on deliveries.
- Reliable, punctual and capable of working independently while collaborating closely with branch colleagues.
- Physically fit and able to carry out manual handling tasks and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Basic IT literacy to use handheld devices, delivery apps and branch systems for completing orders and recording PODs.
Working Hours, Salary and Benefits
- Full‑time, permanent position based at our Colney Heath branch. Typical contracted hours are Monday to Friday with 1 in 2 Saturday mornings working 08.00 - 12.00 to meet customer needs.
- Competitive salary in line with experience and role responsibilities - ÂŁ45,000.
