Position Overview

We are recruiting for an HGV Class 2 Hiab role based at our AVS Guildford branch. This is a permanent, full-time position. The role is responsible for the safe and efficient delivery and collection of materials using a Class 2 vehicle fitted with a Hiab, providing excellent customer service to both trade and retail customers. The successful candidate will work closely with branch colleagues to ensure timely deliveries, safe load handling and professional representation of Lawsons on site and at customer premises.

Working Hours

This is a full-time, permanent position. Typical hours are Monday to Friday 07:30–17:00, with 1 in 2 Saturdays 08:00 - 12:00.

Main Responsibilities

  • Drive a Class 2 HGV fitted with a Hiab to deliver and collect materials safely and professionally, adhering to all road traffic and company regulations.
  • Operate the Hiab crane to load, unload and position materials at customer sites and branch locations, ensuring safe lifting practices and correct use of slings, chains and attachments.
  • Carry out pre‑use vehicle and Hiab checks, complete vehicle defect reports and ensure all vehicle paperwork, permits and licences are up to date.
  • Secure loads appropriately for transport and check goods against delivery notes, reporting any discrepancies or damage promptly.
  • Provide excellent customer service on site, liaising with customers and site personnel in a professional manner.
  • Assist with yard duties at the branch when required, including helping colleagues with loading, unloading and stock movement.
  • Comply with health and safety policies, safe systems of work and industry best practice at all times.
  • Maintain accurate records including delivery notes, timesheets and vehicle check logs in line with company procedures.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Valid UK Category C licence with Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) and digital tachograph card required.
  • Proven experience operating vehicles with a Hiab/crane and handling building materials (essential).
  • Demonstrable experience operating a Hiab on a Class 2 vehicle; FASS/NC levels or equivalent Hiab training advantageous.
  • Good practical skills, physically fit and able to handle manual handling tasks in line with safe lifting practices.
  • Strong knowledge of load securing, slinging and lifting operations, and understanding of relevant health and safety legislation.
  • Good communication skills and a customer‑focused approach with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Reliable, punctual and flexible with regard to working hours and customer requirements.
  • Basic numeracy and the ability to complete accurate paperwork.
