Lawrie & Symington is looking for a practical, reliable and hardworking Maintenance & Facilities Assistant to support the day-to-day operation of our busy Lanark Agricultural Centre.
This is a varied, hands-on role within a working livestock auction market with an onsite café and a growing events operation. By day, the site is a busy agricultural market; during evenings and weekends, areas can be transformed into event spaces for dinners, markets, exhibitions, private functions and other events.
We are looking for someone with good practical ability, common sense and a proactive approach someone who is comfortable working independently, can spot what needs done and is happy to turn their hand to a wide range of maintenance, facilities and site-support tasks.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out general day-to-day maintenance and minor repairs across the site.
- Undertake basic practical tasks such as minor joinery, painting and decorating, assembling or repairing fixtures and fittings, and other general maintenance jobs within your capability.
- Identify faults, defects or larger maintenance requirements and report these promptly so specialist contractors can be arranged where required.
- Support the general upkeep and presentation of the auction market, café, event spaces, storage areas and wider site.
- Assist with practical livestock market set-up when required, including moving, removing, repositioning and setting up pens, gates and barriers.
- Assist with event set-up, venue changeovers and breakdowns, including moving and positioning tables, chairs, staging, barriers and other equipment.
- Help return event areas to normal operational use following functions and events.
- Undertake keyholder duties, including opening and securing areas of the premises, lock-up checks and following site security and alarm procedures.
- Work independently and undertake lone-working duties when required, in line with company procedures.
- Carry out outdoor maintenance and site tasks when required, including work in varying weather conditions.
- Keep maintenance and storage areas safe, organised and tidy, working alongside the existing cleaning team where appropriate.
- Assist with deliveries, loading/unloading and general practical site requirements where reasonably required.
- Follow all company health and safety procedures and report hazards, damage or maintenance concerns promptly.
- Support the wider business during busy auction periods, events and operational changeovers.
About You
Good all-round practical and maintenance skills, with the ability to carry out a variety of minor repairs and odd jobs safely and competently.
Reliable, trustworthy and comfortable being a keyholder.
Able to work independently and use initiative without constant supervision.
Comfortable working in a busy agricultural and livestock auction environment.
Able to safely undertake a physically active role involving regular movement around a large site and the handling or repositioning of furniture, gates, barriers and equipment.
Flexible and willing to support different areas of the business when required.
Comfortable working early mornings, evenings, late finishes and weekends as required.
A full UK driving licence is preferred due to the unsociable hours associated with some shifts.
IOSH training or other relevant health & safety, maintenance or facilities qualifications/courses would be advantageous.
Previous experience in maintenance, facilities, agriculture, construction, property maintenance, caretaking or a similar practical role would be beneficial, but the right practical attitude and ability are equally important.
This is a part-time role, with working hours scheduled around the requirements of the business. The rota will vary depending on livestock sales, events and operational requirements and will normally be issued with at least one months’ notice.
The successful candidate must therefore be flexible and available for a mixture of early mornings, daytime shifts, evenings, late finishes and weekends. There may also be opportunities to work additional hours or overtime when business demands require.
What We Provide
Competitive rate of pay.
A varied working environment where no two days are quite the same.
The opportunity to work across both our established livestock auction operation and our developing events business.
