Lawes Consulting is recruiting two Commercial SME Underwriters for a growing Manchester team. One role requires 5+ years’ SME underwriting or trading experience; the other suits candidates with 1-2 years’ experience keen to develop. Both will underwrite diverse SME risks, build broker relationships, and work in the Manchester office at least three days a week to support team collaboration and growth.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Underwrite a broad range of SME commercial risks with sound risk assessment
  • Manage new business and renewals efficiently to meet agreed targets
  • Develop and maintain effective trading relationships with brokers
  • Collaborate with team members to support business growth objectives
  • Ensure underwriting decisions comply with company guidelines and risk appetite
  • Represent the business professionally in all client and broker interactions

DAY-TO-DAY

  • Review, assess, and price SME commercial insurance risks
  • Engage regularly with brokers to negotiate terms and provide underwriting support
  • Handle daily trading activities and maintain an active case portfolio
  • Monitor market trends and identify new business opportunities
  • Participate actively in team meetings and strategy discussions

EXPERIENCE

  • For the senior position: Minimum 5 years’ underwriting experience in trading or a related field
  • For the junior role: 1-2 years’ experience with a proven ability to learn and develop quickly
  • Proven ability to manage a varied portfolio of SME risks
  • Experience working with brokers in a fast-paced, target-driven environment
  • Strong understanding of underwriting disciplines, risk assessment, and pricing
