Sector: Commercial Insurance | Location: Scotland (Hybrid) | Level: Senior / Mid-Corporate
I am delighted to be partnering with one of the world's leading commercial insurers on a key appointment within their Scottish operation. This is a high-profile, externally-facing Development Underwriter role sitting at the heart of their Mid-Market and Mid-Corporate strategy in Scotland — and a genuine opportunity for an ambitious underwriting professional to shape how a major insurer partners with the broker community north of the border.
This is not a desk underwriting role. It’s a business development and technical underwriting position combined — requiring someone who can lead on large, complex cases, build and own broker relationships at a senior level, and drive profitable new business growth through their own pipeline.
The role:
- Act as the face of the business in presenting propositions for larger Mid-Market and Mid-Corporate risks, drawing on deep industry knowledge and technical underwriting expertise.
- Work with internal Trading Underwriters to negotiate coverage, wordings and pricing that differentiate the proposition and meet customer needs.
- Proactively build and manage a robust pipeline of qualified Mid-Market and Mid-Corporate new business opportunities, leveraging both client and broker relationships.
- Lead and fully embed the large case management process for new business across the Scottish region.
- Develop and own collaborative broker relationships — and in some cases direct client relationships — taking full accountability for the generation, placement and retention of profitable commercial business from self-sourced activity.
- Underwrite profitable new and existing business, in line with established underwriting controls and practices, and act as a referral point for the branch.
- Develop and maintain a quality distribution strategy and communication plan with key influential brokers to ensure financial KPIs are met.
- Maintain a strong understanding of the regional book's performance.
Experience:
- Expert P&C technical underwriting knowledge, with a strong track record within the Scottish market.
- A proven record of securing and retaining large-scale, complex commercial business through established senior broker relationships.
- Demonstrable technical and sales experience, with effective pipeline management at Mid-Market or Mid-Corporate level.
- Strong insight development capability, with experience managing both customer and broker portfolios.
- Personal impact and influence — comfortable presenting, negotiating, and persuading at senior level.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- DIP CII qualified or equivalent, with a proven track record in underwriting Mid-Market and Mid-Corporate commercial risks.
