Location: London

Reporting to: Chief Operations Officer

Department: Compliance / Legal & Regulatory

Salary: Circa Β£100,000

Role Overview

Our client is seeking an experienced Compliance Manager – Marine War Insurance to lead and strengthen the compliance function across its Marine insurance business with a focus on Marine War. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring full regulatory adherence across Marine underwriting, claims and underwriting activities, providing expert guidance on evolving regulatory requirements, and embedding a strong culture of compliance throughout the organisation.

This is a pivotal role for a technically strong compliance professional with a genuine specialism in Marine insurance, who can operate confidently across Marine War and associated classes, and who understands the regulatory and market dynamics unique to the Marine sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement and maintain a robust compliance framework covering all Marine insurance activities, ensuring alignment with FCA, PRA and Lloyd's regulatory requirements (and other relevant international regulators as applicable).
  • Monitor, interpret and communicate the impact of regulatory change relevant to Marine insurance, including sanctions, anti-money laundering, conduct risk and market conduct rules.
  • Provide day-to-day compliance advice and support to underwriting, claims and broking teams on Marine-specific matters, including policy wordings, coverage issues and market practice.
  • Oversee sanctions screening and due diligence processes relevant to Marine risks, including vessel, cargo and voyage-related exposures.
  • Lead on regulatory reporting, ensuring accurate and timely submissions to relevant bodies.
  • Manage relationships with regulators, Lloyd's market oversight functions and other external stakeholders as required.
  • Conduct compliance monitoring reviews, thematic audits and risk assessments across Marine business lines, identifying gaps and driving remediation.
  • Deliver compliance training and awareness programmes tailored to Marine underwriters, brokers and claims handlers.
  • Support the business in the development and review of new products, distribution arrangements and delegated authority agreements from a compliance perspective.
  • Maintain and update compliance policies, procedures and the compliance risk register in line with business and regulatory developments.
  • Act as a key point of contact for compliance matters arising from Marine claims, disputes or regulatory enquiries.
  • Prepare regular compliance reporting for senior management, the Board and relevant committees.

Candidate Requirements

Experience

  • Proven compliance experience gained within the (re)insurance market, with specific and demonstrable exposure to Marine insurance (Hull, Cargo, Marine Liability, or related classes).
  • Strong working knowledge of FCA/PRA regulatory requirements and, ideally, Lloyd's market compliance obligations.
  • Experience managing sanctions, AML and financial crime considerations as they apply to Marine risks (e.g. vessel ownership, flag states, trade routes).
  • Track record of building or enhancing compliance frameworks and driving cultural change around compliance and conduct risk.
  • Experience liaising directly with regulators and/or Lloyd's oversight functions is advantageous.

Skills & Attributes

  • Strong technical understanding of Marine insurance products, market practice and associated regulatory nuances.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence and advise underwriting and claims teams at all levels.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with sound commercial judgement.
  • Confident communicator, both written and verbal, able to translate complex regulatory requirements into practical guidance.
  • High level of integrity, discretion and attention to detail.

Qualifications

  • Relevant professional qualification preferred (e.g. ACII, ICA Diploma in Compliance, or equivalent).
  • Degree educated or equivalent professional experience.

What's On Offer

  • Competitive salary and benefits package, commensurate with experience.
  • Opportunity to play a key role in shaping the compliance function within a specialist Marine insurance business.
