Job title: Assistant Underwriter (VIP & SME Clients)
Salary: £45,000 + benefits
Location: London – hybrid (3 days in the office, 2 days from home)
PURPOSE OF ROLE
A well-established commercial insurer is looking for an Assistant Underwriter to join its Direct Business team in London. The role supports the development and management of the Chinese business portfolio, VIP clients and SME accounts, combining hands-on underwriting support with client and broker relationship management.
Reporting to the Head of Direct Business, you will play a key part in profitable portfolio growth through sound risk assessment, accurate administration and first-class service. It is a strong opportunity for an ambitious insurance professional to build out their underwriting career within a growing, client-focused business.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Preparing quotations for new business, policy amendments and renewals in line with underwriting guidelines
• Assessing and analysing risks using underwriting knowledge and sound judgement
• Referring risks that fall outside delegated authority to senior management, and communicating underwriting decisions clearly
• Managing enquiries from brokers, corporate clients and direct customers professionally and promptly
• Developing and maintaining strong relationships with key clients to support retention and business growth
• Supporting the administration of multinational and fronting business arrangements
• Maintaining accurate underwriting records and ensuring compliance with regulatory and company requirements
DAY-TO-DAY
• Gathering and reviewing underwriting information from clients, brokers and other sources
• Conducting credit checks where required, to support risk selection and minimise exposure to bad debt and moral hazard
• Processing endorsements, renewals and policy documentation accurately and within agreed service standards
• Negotiating renewals and policy amendments to achieve positive customer outcomes
• Liaising with internal teams across underwriting, claims, finance and policy servicing
• Delivering a high standard of service that supports customer satisfaction and retention
• Supporting departmental projects and other duties as they arise
EXPERIENCE
• Minimum 3 years’ experience in underwriting support, underwriting or business development within the commercial insurance sector
• Sound knowledge of commercial insurance products and underwriting principles
• Good understanding of relevant insurance regulations and market practices
• Progress towards, or completion of, the Certificate in Insurance (Cert CII) is desirable
SKILLS
• Fluency in both English and Mandarin Chinese (essential)
• Strong communication, negotiation and relationship management skills
• Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities
• Confident working independently as well as collaboratively within a team
• Accuracy and attention to detail across documentation and record-keeping
