Job title: Trading Underwriter Salary: Β£ 45,000 - Β£55,000 Location: Essex PURPOSE OF ROLE An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Trading Underwriter to join a growing underwriting team. The successful candidate will be responsible for underwriting a broad range of household and scheme products across multiple distribution channels, including e-trade, coverholders and open market brokers. You will work closely with brokers to maximise new business conversion and retention, while ensuring risks are assessed in line with underwriting guidelines, delegated authority and the interests of capacity providers. RESPONSIBILITIES Underwrite household and scheme products in line with agreed underwriting guidelines and authority levels. Develop strong relationships with brokers and other external partners. Trade effectively with brokers to maximise conversion and retention. Manage new business, renewal and existing business activity. Handle underwriting referrals where risks fall outside the authority of other team members. Work towards agreed GWP, income, conversion and retention targets. Support the development and enhancement of new and existing products. Deal with enquiries from brokers, clients, insurers and other third parties professionally and efficiently. Ensure underwriting decisions are made accurately and with appropriate consideration of risk and capacity requirements. Complete regular reporting and provide updates to management. Support wider underwriting and operational activities as required. DAY-TO-DAY Assessing and underwriting household risks across new business and renewals. Trading and negotiating with brokers to secure business. Reviewing risks and making informed underwriting decisions within delegated authority. Managing referrals and providing technical underwriting support. Maintaining accurate records and ensuring all activity complies with internal procedures and regulatory requirements. Working closely with underwriting, claims and administration colleagues. Building and maintaining productive relationships with brokers and business partners. Supporting income, conversion and retention objectives. Contributing to process and product development initiatives. EXPERIENCE Previous experience within household underwriting is essential. Proven underwriting experience gained within an MGA, insurer or Lloyd's environment. Experience of trading with brokers and developing strong broker relationships. Good understanding of general insurance principles and underwriting practices. Experience working within delegated underwriting authority. Cert CII qualified, ideally progressing towards Dip CII. Strong commercial awareness with a track record of achieving business objectives. Comfortable making sound underwriting decisions based on available information. SKILLS Strong underwriting and risk assessment skills. Excellent broker relationship and trading abilities. Commercially minded with a focus on conversion and retention. Strong numerical and analytical ability. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Confident decision-maker with good judgement. Highly organised with the ability to prioritise workloads effectively. Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Good understanding of regulatory requirements and internal controls.
