We have a network of reporters, correspondents and editors across 14 countries, all of whom are energetic, dynamic, upbeat individuals who work hard on producing excellent off‑diary journalism.
We’re seeking an ambitious reporter to look under the hood of the world’s biggest law firms. This role is ideal for a journalist who thrives on delving into data, landing exclusives, and producing deeply reported stories on the business of law. The successful candidate will know how to build relationships with sophisticated professionals, be comfortable working with data, and can track major developments across elite global firms such as leadership and structural changes, strategy shifts, partner pay, lawyer well‑being, financial performance, talent wars, and market expansion.
Data is a big part of this role. You’ll be at home finding stories in numbers, analysing firm performance, and using data visualization tools to make complex information clear and compelling for readers. We are looking for someone who can combine source‑driven reporting with analytical rigor and a passion for data to produce scoops, trend stories, and visually engaging enterprise journalism.
Key Responsibilities- Break news and deliver exclusives on the world’s largest law firms and the business forces shaping them.
- Build and maintain a strong network of sources across law firms, legal industry consultants, recruiters, and other market insiders.
- Cover key developments including leadership changes, law firm finances, compensation, hiring, mergers, strategy, and client trends.
- Use data to identify story ideas, support reporting, and add depth to coverage.
- Analyse datasets related to law firm performance, headcount, revenue, profitability, expansion, and market trends.
- Create or collaborate on charts, graphics, and other visual storytelling elements that help readers understand the story quickly.
- Produce a mix of breaking news, enterprise, analysis, and feature stories.
- Work closely with editors and colleagues across the newsroom to shape coverage that is authoritative, competitive, and distinctive.
- Several years of reporting experience, ideally covering legal, financial, business, or professional services sectors.
- A strong track record of breaking news and developing exclusive stories.
- Excellent source‑building skills and the ability to cultivate trust with high‑level industry contacts.
- Strong news judgment and the ability to spot what matters in a fast‑moving, competitive environment.
- Comfort working with data, including cleaning, analysing, and interpreting datasets for journalism.
- Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau, Flourish, Datawrapper, or similar platforms.
- Ability to turn complex financial or operational information into clear, engaging stories.
- Strong writing, reporting, and interviewing skills, with close attention to accuracy and detail.
- A collaborative mindset and the ability to work effectively across a digital newsroom.
- Experience covering the legal industry or major professional services firms.
- Familiarity with law firm financial metrics, rankings, and the global legal market.
- Experience using spreadsheets, database tools, and visualization platforms to support reporting.
- Interest in combining traditional beat reporting with investigative and data‑driven journalism.
