As a Senior Control, Electrical & Instrumentation (CE&I) Design Engineer, you will work within multidisciplinary teams, delivering and leading CE&I design activities that modify and improve existing nuclear chemical processing facilities. You will report to the Design Office Manager and be located at the Springfields Nuclear Licensed Site in Preston, Lancashire.
Responsibilities
- Experience of leading a CE&I team of Design Engineers, Designers and CAD Operators.
- Overseeing the design of Functional Safety Systems for the nuclear industry.
- Reviewing equipment specifications, initiating tenders, and evaluating supplier submissions.
- Reviewing proposals for detailed design drawings and documentation, commissioning support documentation and design handover packs.
- Reviewing / checking & approval of CE&I designs and guiding and mentoring Designers and Engineers within the project team.
- Providing Intelligent Customer oversight for designs delivered by external consultancies (safety, quality, scope, compliance).
- Ensuring all design deliverables meet required standards and are fully compliant with relevant regulations.
- Overseeing designs for CE&I systems in Hazardous Areas, in accordance with the DSEAR Regulations.
- Attendance and contribution at HAZOP reviews.
- Leading CE&I Design Reviews.
- Overseeing the development and production of Hazard Management Strategies.
- Overseeing the production of Engineering Substantiation documentation.
Key Duties And Technical Responsibilities
- Act as intelligent customer for the CE&I discipline.
- Manage the production of CE&I drawings such as block cable diagrams and single-line diagrams, instrument loop diagrams, schematics, etc.
- Manage the production of cable calculations manually or using Amtech/Trimble.
- Oversee the preparation and management of design governance documentation (Design Quality Plans, Design Risk Assessments, Design Reviews, etc.).
- Maintain ownership of design intent from design through to installation and commissioning.
- Oversee and check documentation required for UKCA / CE Marking technical files.
- Act as the CDM Principal Designer representative.
- Contribute to and assist with the presentation of technical solutions at design reviews, HAZOPs, and other formal assessments.
- Provide supporting information for safety case development, including engineering substantiation.
- Provide input for project estimates, schedules, and resource planning.
- Mentor CE&I Engineers/Designers to develop their CE&I skills.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal stakeholders and external design suppliers.
- Develop designs for small power distribution systems.
- Oversee the specification and selection of instrumentation including designs associated with installation requirements (e.g. Instrumentation loops, instrument pipework, etc.).
- Oversee the production of CE&I designs for modifications to process plant instrumentation and PLC‑based control systems.
- Work in accordance with design governance procedures and relevant UK regulations (e.g. CDM 2015).
- Use CE&I design software tools: AutoCAD, Amtech/Trimble, Sistema, Dialux, etc.
Essential Experience
- Demonstrable experience (greater than 10 years) of leading & managing a CE&I Design Engineering team, delivering complex engineering solutions within the nuclear industry.
- FS Eng - Certified Functional Safety Engineer - Safety Instrumented Systems (IEC 61508/61511).
- Demonstrable experience leading the CE&I activities in support of a Periodic Safety Review of a high-hazard nuclear facility.
- Demonstrable experience with CE&I designs for Hazardous Areas in accordance with the DSEAR Regulations.
- Demonstrable experience of CE / UKCA marking of equipment and machinery.
- Demonstrable experience of Motion Control system design.
- Demonstrable understanding and experience of the HAZOP process.
- Demonstrable understanding of the CE&I aspects of a Nuclear Safety Case.
- Demonstrable experience of Functional Safety, Nuclear Safety & Security within the nuclear industry.
- Completion of craft-based apprenticeship in a CE&I discipline.
Qualifications
- A minimum of a BEng (Hons) degree in a relevant CE&I discipline, grade 2:1 or above.
- Certified Competence in CompEx Ex12 (IEC 60079‑14).
- Certified Functional Safety Engineer (FS Eng) – Safety Instrumented Systems (IEC 61508 / IEC 61511).
- Minimum of 10 years' nuclear industry experience in a CE&I Design role, leading CE&I Design teams.
Other Required Qualifications And Experience
- Minimum of MIET membership.
- IOSH Managing Safely.
- Complete an accredited hands‑on apprenticeship in a relevant CE&I discipline.
- Knowledge of applicable engineering standards and regulations and their practical application.
- Experienced and qualified in BS 7671, 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations.
- Knowledge of CE&I Engineering principles.
- Experience working in general operations within a nuclear facility.
- IT literate, with the ability to use CAE tools such as AutoCAD and Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel.
