As a Nuclear Safeguards Lead you will deliver high quality Nuclear Material Accountancy and Safeguards support across the Springfields site. You will be expected to meet all regulatory requirements and deliverables in relation to Nuclear Accountancy whilst also leading, mentoring, and developing a team of Nuclear Material Accountants. You will work closely with project teams, operational areas, and regulatory stakeholders to ensure safeguards requirements are embedded into all current and future processes and projects whilst maintaining compliance with UK safeguards regulations and ONR expectations. You will report to the Security Manager and be located at Preston.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, support, and develop a team of Nuclear Material Accountants, ensuring high performance, technical competence, and regulatory excellence.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and day-to-day guidance to ensure accurate accountancy, strong analytical capability, and consistent application of safeguards principles.
- Allocate work, set priorities, and support the delivery of team outputs, ensuring deadlines and regulatory requirements are met.
- Foster a culture of integrity and continuous improvement within the Safeguards team.
- Support professional development, training, and succession planning for team members.
- Represent the Safeguards team in cross-functional meetings and ensure communication between projects, operations, and regulatory bodies.
- Apply Safeguards by Design principles across new and existing projects.
- Maintain strong working knowledge of The Nuclear Safeguards (EU Exit) Regulations 2019 (NSR19).
- Understand and apply the ONR Nuclear Material Accountancy, Control & Safeguards Assessment Principles (ONMACS).
- Ensure full compliance with safeguards regulations and implement changes through appropriate processes and procedures.
- Oversee and deliver robust Nuclear Material (NM) Accounts.
- Produce, analyse, and submit Nuclear Material Accountancy reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Serve as safeguards lead for all meetings with the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR), ensuring reports, audits, and assessments are delivered to set deadlines.
- Engage with national and international stakeholders to identify and apply best/good practice.
Qualifications
- Someone who can motivate, coach, and develop a specialist team.
- Experience managing or mentoring technical staff in a regulated environment.
- Technical expertise in nuclear safeguards.
- Understanding of safety cases and their implications for new nuclear build projects.
- Experience designing and implementing accountancy processes for new flows or facilities.
- Experience supporting new build or major project implementation.
- Interpret and apply government guidance, regulations, and ONR expectations.
- Strong capability in data analysis, reporting, and presentation.
