Our clients based close to Portsmouth have an exciting opportunity for an EDM Operator to join their growing team! The EDM Operator/Setter is responsible for setting, operating, and maintaining Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) equipment to manufacture precision tooling and components. The role supports the production of high-precision parts, tooling, and dies used in our clients' manufacturing processes. The position requires the ability to work from engineering drawings and CAD data to produce components to tight tolerances using both wire EDM and die sink EDM machines.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Set up and operate wire EDM machines to manufacture precision components and tooling.
- Set up and operate die sink (spark erosion) EDM machines for complex cavity machining.
- Interpret engineering drawings, CAD data, and technical specifications.
- Prepare and mount electrodes and workpieces, ensuring correct alignment and setup.
- Select appropriate machining parameters, offsets, and programs.
- Produce components to tight tolerances and surface finish requirements.
- Perform basic programming or program adjustments where required.
- Conduct in-process inspection using precision measuring equipment.
- Maintain machine performance through routine maintenance and cleaning.
- Troubleshoot machining issues and optimise machining processes.
- Work closely with toolmakers, machinists, and engineers to support tooling and production requirements.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Experience setting and operating wire EDM machines.
- Experience setting and operating die sink EDM machines.
- Understanding of EDM machining principles and electrode wear compensation.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T.
- Experience working with tight tolerances and precision components.
- Skilled in the use of precision measuring instruments.
