Our clients based close to Portsmouth have an exciting opportunity for a Head of Health, Safety & Environment to join their growing team.

The Head of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) leads the organisations strategy and implementation of health, safety, and environmental management across all UK operations.

The roles main objectives are to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related illnesses; ensure legal compliance; and drive continuous improvement in the companys HSE culture and performance.

The role also provides governance, guidance, and coordination of HSE practices across global subsidiaries in the US and Asia.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement and review the Companys HSE Policy and Procedures, ensuring compliance with current UK legislation and relevant international standards (ISO 45001 and work towards ISO 14001).
  • Maintain a comprehensive HSE management system aligned with business needs and continuous improvement goals.
  • Ensure that safe working practices are adhered to by all employees, contractors, and visitors, meeting regulatory and legal requirements.
  • Monitor, interpret and communicate new and emerging HSE legislation to the business, ensuring proactive compliance.
  • Advise all levels of the organisation on HSE matters and provide timely reports and metrics to the Board and as a member of the Site Leadership Team.
  • Lead cross-functional improvement initiatives targeting accident prevention, ergonomics, and environmental performance.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Production and People Operations teams to develop and implement effective safety and environmental programs.
  • Drive initiatives to reduce energy consumption, emissions, and waste generation in line with corporate sustainability and carbon reduction objectives.
  • Oversee compliance with COSHH, REACH, and waste management regulations, ensuring safe handling of chemicals and materials.
  • Promote sustainable manufacturing practices across operations and support the adoption of new environmental technologies.
  • Design and deliver HSE training programmes tailored to all levels, from operators to senior management.
  • Develop behavioural safety initiatives and promote positive engagement in safety and environmental awareness.
  • Coach and mentor line managers and supervisors to embed a proactive HSE culture.
  • Lead audits, inspections and incident investigations, ensuring effective corrective and preventive actions.
  • Contribute to global HSE alignment and continuous improvement across all regions.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum 10 years experience in HSE leadership within a manufacturing environment, ideally electronics, engineering, or automotive sectors.
  • Strong working knowledge of UK Health, Safety and Environmental legislation and standards.
  • Proven track record in implementing ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems.
  • NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent) qualification; Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH) preferred.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and influencing skills across all levels of the organisation.
  • Demonstrated success in promoting cultural change and behavioural safety.
