About the Role

The OGC Senior Lawyer – Conflicts and Ethics (EMEA) is an integral part of Latham’s Office of the General Counsel team. This role will be responsible for supporting a number of compliance programmes including new business and conflicts intake and general regulatory risk management, while maintaining superior substantive knowledge of and familiarity with the legal ethics and professional responsibility rules applicable in the firm’s geographic jurisdictions, particularly those outside of the United States Latham’s procedures, policies, and practices relating to conflicts and other ethical issues. This role will be located in our London office.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

  • Guiding and supporting Latham fee earners, Ethics Committee members, Deputy General Counsel, Conflicts analysts, and others in evaluating, and resolving ethical and business conflict issues relating to conflicts checks for laterals and new business, particularly in relation to those that require high-level legal analysis with a focus on the most complex conflicts issues.
  • Performing legal research and providing superior substantive analysis relating to conflicts or other aspects of ethics and/or professional responsibility as requested by any senior member of the Office of the General Counsel.
  • Taking responsibility for any general risk management programmes, such as file audits, accountants letters, SRA compliance that the Associate General Counsel requests.
  • Reviewing region specific complex outside counsel guidelines, engagement letters and pitching documents to prepare a response to clients that are in line with standard firm policies and procedures.
  • Participating in the training and onboarding of new Conflicts and Ethics Lawyers within EMEA.

  • Display highly developed and professional interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with people at all organisational levels of the firm.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Possess the willingness to work in a hybrid style, with the majority of the days being in the office.

And have:

  • A Law degree or equivalent.
  • A qualification as a solicitor, barrister, or equivalent foreign lawyer with an unfettered right to practice in their home jurisdiction.
  • An active practising certificate or local bar membership.
  • Experience working in a conflicts team.
  • Post qualification experience, preferably.
  • General law firm compliance experience, preferably.
