We currently have a fantastic opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join the team here at Lateral. The Mechanical design engineer is a Marine Engineer, confident and capable in developing mechanical systems and arrangements for complex, high-quality superyacht projects. Working in a team of experienced engineers and naval architects across a wide range of projects, you’ll be at the cutting edge of modern superyacht engineering.
Responsibilities include:
- Working with Naval Architects and Marine Engineers to conceptualise and develop ship mechanical systems and arrangements.
- Design and integration of ship ancillary systems.
- Mechanical system calculations, including those for powering, electrical loading, piping, cooling, ventilation, etc.
- Producing clear and well-presented drawings, plans and diagrams to a suitable quality and standard.
- Processing technical problems and effectively seeking out the correct technical solution using sound engineering judgement.
- Insight in naval, structural and mechanical needs to conceptualise, develop and detail the integration of complex vessel equipment.
- Collating input data and applying it to standard calculations, providing commentary on the results, and identifying the path for design solutions.
- Commercial awareness, ensuring that deliverables are being carried out and completed to an appropriate standard and level of detail.
- Using 2D CAD (AutoCAD) to produce design information (Advanced skill level).
- Utilising 2D/3D CAD and other specialist software as required to produce and review design information.
- Using MS Office to develop reports, spreadsheet data and presentation information.
- Knowledge and understanding of ship systems design, preferably with direct shipyard experience.
- Knowledge and understanding of ship structural design and its impact upon integration.
- Knowledge and understanding of system design theory and the design lifecycle.
The role is based in our Southampton office, and we offer flexibility and hybrid working arrangements around the core hours and in-office days required for our team.
