We currently have a fantastic opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join the team here at Lateral. The Mechanical design engineer is a Marine Engineer, confident and capable in developing mechanical systems and arrangements for complex, high-quality superyacht projects. Working in a team of experienced engineers and naval architects across a wide range of projects, you’ll be at the cutting edge of modern superyacht engineering.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Working with Naval Architects and Marine Engineers to conceptualise and develop ship mechanical systems and arrangements.
- Powering and propulsion system selection and concept architecture.
- Ship ancillary systems design and integration.
- Mechanical system calculations, including those for powering, electrical loading, piping, cooling, ventilation, etc.
- Creating system schematics and P&IDs, and draughting these to international standards.
- Creating technical space arrangements and equipment integration.
- Sharing knowledge and experience with colleagues across all disciplines.
- Supporting and developing new ideas, designs and ways of working as part of the company’s ongoing investment in R&D and continuous improvement.
What We’re Looking For
Essential experience and skills:
- Minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience in the marine industry.
- The ability to produce clear and well-presented drawings, plans and diagrams to a suitable quality and standard.
- The ability to process technical problems and effectively seek out the correct technical solution using sound engineering judgement.
- Insight in naval, structural and mechanical needs in order to conceptualise, develop and detail the integration of complex vessel equipment.
- Collating input data and applying to standard calculations, providing commentary on the results, and identifying the path for design solutions.
- Well organised, self-motivated, and comfortable working to production schedules and deadlines.
- Commercial awareness, with the ability to ensure that deliverables are being carried out and completed to an appropriate standard and level of detail.
Desirable (but not essential):
- 2D CAD (AutoCAD) to produce design information (Advanced skill level).
- 2D/3D CAD and other specialist software as required to produce and to review design information.
- MS Office to develop reports, spreadsheet data and presentation information.
- Knowledge and understanding of statutory regulations and Classification and Flag rule sets.
- Knowledge and understanding of ship systems design, preferably with direct shipyard experience.
- Knowledge and understanding of ship structural design & its impact upon integration.
- Knowledge and understanding of system design theory & an understanding of the design lifecycle.
The role is based in our Southampton office, and we offer flexibility and hybrid working arrangements around the core hours and in-office days required for our team.
