The role
Operating from our Harrogate depot, you’ll cover a vast and varied patch—505 square miles of scenic countryside, charming villages, and bustling towns like Harrogate, Knaresborough, and Ripon. Each day, you\’ll receive your route and take the lead in safely navigating your vehicle, assisting your crew and delivering the friendly, top-tier service our residents count on. We call this teamwork! Your role as a Refuse Driver is extremely important, as you’ll be on the front line of a vital public service. This position offers a natural pathway towards supervisory or operational management roles, with further opportunities to develop and transition into other areas of our extensive range of services. You’ll be working in a supportive environment, with regular supervision and access to a wide variety of staff benefits. Shifts are Tuesday to Friday with the very occasional weekend working, for which you will receive a £30 weekend allowance providing you work 6 hours or more.
What you will bring
- A Category C driving entitlement / HGV Licence
- Some knowledge and experience of operating a large goods vehicle
- Knowledge of safe working practices and general Health and Safety principles
- A Valid Driver CPC card also known as a driver qualification card (DQC) with a minimum of 3 years validity
Roles and Responsibilities
- Operating o-licence vehicles in and around the county
- Supervising small crews in your dedicated area of the county
- Responsible for the safe operation of Large Goods Vehicles [LGV] up to 32t.
- Ensuring the vehicle is clean and in good working order.
- Collecting residual waste, garden waste, food waste or recyclable materials from domestic properties.
- To take ownership over issues and be responsible for accurate reporting accidents, acting as the appointed person in relation to first aid.
- Typical working days and hours currently vary between different areas of the new council, but you need to be prepared to start early. Some weekend and bank holiday working may be required.
