We are delighted to inform you that we are now recruiting for our 2026-2027 Veterinary Nursing Rotating Internship cohort, which begins in August 2026. The nursing internship programme is aimed at working with newly-qualified nurses to develop their day one and referral nursing skills. We recommend this programme for nurses up to 3 years qualified who would like more experience in a referral setting.

Nursing interns rotate around our Small Animal Referral Hospital on a dedicated timetable, gaining confidence in a variety of nursing skills. Nurses also benefit from regular off clinic time, where they will be supported to undertake individual project work, such as clinical audits. The successful candidates will need to demonstrate a high standard of nursing care, a desire to learn and a capability to work under pressure. They will be involved with teaching and supervision of Veterinary and Veterinary Nursing undergraduates on clinical rotations. Flexibility will be necessary as the post will require participation in the OOH rota, including twilight and night work.

Job Purpose: To provide clinical veterinary nursing support during monthly rotations throughout the Small Animal Hospital, developing day one and referral nursing skills, under the direction of the Area Lead/Head Nurse. To develop knowledge of and assist with clinical governance within the hospital. To provide support and guidance for nursing undergraduates during their clinical rotations. To train as a Clinical Coach and attend CPD to further develop nursing knowledge. To participate in a weekend rota and some degree of twilight/night/on-call work.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Carry out clinical nursing duties during rotations throughout the Small Animal Hospital, under the direction of the Area Lead/Head Nurse.
  • Dispensing and administering (under the direct supervision of a veterinary surgeon) medication to animals and maintaining accurate stock control.
  • Following all protocols relating to drug holding, dispensing and handling; giving clear and accurate instructions to clients when dispensing medication.
  • Maintaining accurate patient records with regards to all clinical notes, treatment, diagnoses, client communication and client/patient information.
  • Ensuring that all procedures and consumables are accurately invoiced on patient’s account for duration of stay.
  • Participating in clinical governance activities for the hospital, including significant event reporting, M&M discussions, clinical audit, evidence-based medicine and reflective learning.
  • Completion of a year one skills matrix, for each core area, and other CPD as specified as part of the Nursing Internship Programme.
  • Assisting with teaching of Veterinary and Veterinary Nursing Undergraduates during their clinical rotations.
  • Acting as a mentor for Veterinary Nursing Undergraduates.
  • Assisting with new student intake visit days, which will include some weekend working.
  • Undertaking training to enable completion of Clinical Coach training at the end of programme (you must be one year qualified to engage in this training).
  • Participating in the nurse rotas, to include different shift patterns: early, mid, late, and nights (e.g. 7.15am start, 8.30pm finish, and overnight shifts).
  • Punctuality with all shift patterns is a minimum expected standard.
  • Participation in a weekend rota + bank holidays.
  • Completion of two projects, during supported off clinic time, to include a clinical audit as well as one other project of the interns choosing.
  • Maintaining a good working relationship with all team members.
  • Communicating in an effective and pleasant manner with clients and colleagues.
  • Carry out all other reasonable duties as requested by the line manager.
  • Proactively identify and act upon opportunities for business improvement.
  • Openly identify and discuss problems to implement and sustain improvements that increase the value we deliver to our clients, employees, and students.
