Purpose of the role: The Groundworker Apprentice plays a key role in preparing construction and civil engineering sites and supporting the delivery of infrastructure projects. As one of the first trades on-site, the role focuses on setting out work areas, preparing ground surfaces and installing essential elements such as drainage and foundations to enable structural work to begin. Working alongside engineers, supervisors and other construction trades, the apprentice contributes throughout the full project lifecycle—from initial site preparation through to final completion activities. This is a hands-on, practical role that develops core construction skills while supporting safe, efficient and high-quality site operations.
Apprenticeship Information:
- Level 2 Groundworker Apprenticeship
- Duration: Approximately 18 Months + EPA
- Hourly Rate: £10.40
- Qualification delivered through an approved training provider
- Dedicated study time provided as part of your working week
- Ongoing support from your manager, mentor, and training provider
Key Responsibilities:
- Learn how to read utility plans and drawings
- Get hands-on helping with drainage, concreting and laying paths or surfaces
- Support installing underground services like pipes and ducting
- Learn how to build the foundations that everything else is built on
- Help dig trenches for foundations and utilities
- Support finding underground services safely
- Assist with putting ground and surfaces back to normal after work is completed
- Learn how to safely use tools, equipment and basic machinery
- Help move and organise materials around site
- Support guiding vehicles or machinery safely when needed
- Follow site safety rules at all times, including wearing PPE
- Work safely around machinery, excavations and other hazards
- Help keep the site clean, tidy and safe for everyone
- Work closely with your team, supervisors and other trades
- Ask questions, learn from others and build your confidence on site
- Communicate clearly to support smooth day-to-day work
- Help complete work on time and to the right standard
- Report any issues or problems to your supervisor
- Take pride in your work and the finished result
- Learn on the job and build practical skills every day
- Complete your apprenticeship training and assignments
- Take part in regular check-ins with your manager and training provider
- Follow company rules, processes and expectations at all times
Qualifications / Training:
- Essential: Maths and English at Grade 4 or above (or equivalent of Grade D-A*) or Functional Skills Level 1
