The Pensions & Investment Technology department develop and maintain a range of models that support LCP’s defined benefit pension schemes consulting business in the Pensions Actuarial, Pensions Administration and Investment Consulting departments. There are three teams within the department: Pulse (pensions administration systems), CALM (benefit calculation systems) and Visualise (asset liability modelling “ALM”). This position is for a Senior Developer role within the Pulse team. Pulse is LCP’s cloud-based pension scheme administration platform. It supports pension scheme members, administrators and trustees through secure digital services, including member self-service, case-management tools, client reporting and integrations with external systems such as payroll and banking providers.
As Pulse continues to grow, we are looking for an experienced senior software developer to take a leading hands-on role within the team. This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys solving complex problems, delivering high-quality software and helping to develop the people and engineering practices around them.
What will you be doing?
- You will take ownership of significant pieces of work within the Pulse platform, helping to turn business needs into secure, scalable and maintainable technical solutions.
- You will work closely with developers, product stakeholders and colleagues across LCP to shape designs, make sound technical decisions and deliver high-quality functionality through to release and ongoing support.
- As a senior member of the team, you will set a positive example in the quality of your work and the way you collaborate.
- You will support colleagues through mentoring, constructive code reviews and knowledge sharing, while helping to remove blockers and maintain progress towards the team’s priorities.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Taking technical ownership of substantial features and improvements, from initial design through development, testing, release and live support.
- Designing, developing and maintaining secure, scalable APIs, services and application functionality, primarily using C# and .NET.
- Developing and maintaining data-access solutions, including Entity Framework and SQL Server / Azure SQL, and improving application and database performance where needed.
- Maintaining and evolving the Pulse platform by identifying technical debt, reliability concerns, performance issues and process inefficiencies, and helping the team prioritise proportionate improvements.
- Planning and contributing to more substantial refactoring or re-architecture work where this is needed to support the platform’s longer-term health and direction.
- Building and maintaining appropriate monitoring, logging and alerting — including through Application Insights and related Azure services — to support proactive issue detection and reliable operation.
- Supporting CI/CD pipelines and release management, helping to ensure releases are appropriately planned, tested, deployed and monitored.
- Working collaboratively with Digital Services and other colleagues to ensure solutions align with internal engineering standards, architecture and good practice.
- Supporting the development of the wider team through mentoring, knowledge sharing and constructive, timely code reviews.
- Helping to remove blockers affecting your own work and the wider team, while maintaining focus on the team’s agreed priorities.
- Using AI-assisted development tools effectively and responsibly, while retaining accountability for code quality, security and a clear understanding of the solutions delivered.
What skills and experience are we looking for?
- Strong development experience in C# and .NET, ideally .NET 8 or later.
- Experience building web applications, APIs and back-end services using ASP.NET / ASP.NET Core.
- The ability to design and deliver secure, scalable and maintainable API-based solutions.
- Strong practical experience of Entity Framework / Entity Framework Core and relational databases, including SQL Server and/or Azure SQL.
- The ability to investigate and improve application and database performance, including C# code, SQL queries and data-access patterns.
- Experience writing clean, maintainable and well-tested code, with a practical understanding of SOLID principles, appropriate design patterns and clean-code practices.
- Experience developing and maintaining automated tests, including unit, integration and regression tests.
- Working knowledge of Azure services, including Azure Functions, WebJobs and Blob Storage.
- Experience working with source control, CI/CD pipelines and automated build and deployment processes.
- Experience supporting software in live environments, including release management, incident investigation and resolving production issues.
- A sound understanding of secure software-development practices, including the importance of protecting sensitive data.
- The ability to mentor and support other developers, providing constructive technical feedback and code reviews.
- A pragmatic and proactive approach to problem-solving, with good judgement about priorities, delivery pace, effort and value.
