Landguard is one of Suffolk's most distinctive places: a nationally important landscape where natural habitats, historic assets, recreation and community life come together. The Landguard and Felixstowe Conservation Trust is seeking an inspiring and collaborative Chair to lead its Board of Trustees and help safeguard this special peninsula for future generations. Established in 2022, the Trust acts as an umbrella organisation for Landguard. It manages Landguard Nature Reserve, supports and works alongside local heritage and volunteer organisations, and liaises with public bodies and other partners. Its purpose is to conserve and improve the physical and natural environment, preserve Landguard's historical, architectural and archaeological heritage, and enhance public benefit and enjoyment.
Lead the Board effectively, ensuring trustees contribute fully and decisions remain focused on the Trust's charitable purposes.
Work with trustees and partners to set strategic priorities and monitor delivery, impact, risk and financial sustainability.
Champion high standards of governance, openness, safeguarding and regulatory compliance.
Develop constructive relationships with local authorities, heritage and conservation bodies, community groups, funders, businesses and volunteers.
Represent the Trust externally and advocate confidently for Landguard.
Support succession planning and help build a diverse, skilled and inclusive Board.
You do not need to be a conservation or heritage specialist, but you will share our commitment to protecting Landguard and increasing its value to the public.
You will bring:
Senior leadership or chairing experience gained in the voluntary, public or private sector.
Sound judgement and an understanding of effective charity governance.
The ability to listen, facilitate productive discussion and unite people around shared goals.
Strong communication, influencing and relationship-building skills.
Strategic thinking, integrity and a practical approach to delivery.
Time and enthusiasm to prepare for and chair meetings, engage with stakeholders and support the Trust between meetings.
Experience in environmental conservation, heritage, tourism, visitor attractions, fundraising, partnership working or local community leadership would be welcome.
