Lancing Ltd supplies, installs and supports industrial packaging machinery, including filling, capping, labelling, conveying, coding, shrink wrapping and automated production equipment.We are an innovative, growing business based in Thame, Oxfordshire. As our installed machine base and automation capability continue to expand, we are looking for an experienced engineer to become an important part of our technical team.Working within a small and expanding business offers greater variety, responsibility and influence than a typical engineering role in a large organisation. You will have the opportunity to work across a wide range of machinery and customer applications and develop alongside the company.

Role Description

We are looking for an experienced Service & Commissioning Engineer with strong hands‑on industrial machinery experience. This is not a trainee engineering position.The role involves installing, commissioning, servicing, maintaining and repairing industrial packaging and automated production machinery at customer sites throughout the UK. You will be expected to diagnose faults independently, work directly with customers and take ownership of jobs through to completion.Key responsibilities include:Install and commission packaging machinery at customer sites throughout the UK.

  • Service, maintain and repair filling, capping, labelling, conveying, shrink wrapping, coding and related automated machinery.
  • Diagnose mechanical and electrical faults efficiently and methodically.
  • Carry out machine setup, adjustment, testing and production trials.
  • Read and work from electrical drawings, wiring diagrams and technical documentation.
  • Assist with machinery preparation, modification and testing at our Thame facility when not working on customer sites.
  • Provide practical operator and maintenance training to customers.
  • Complete accurate service reports and communicate clearly with customers and the Lancing team.
  • Represent Lancing professionally on customer sites.
  • Work independently and take responsibility for jobs from diagnosis through to completion.

Qualifications & Experience Essential

Please only apply if you can demonstrate the majority of the following:

At least 3 years' practical experience servicing, maintaining, installing or commissioning industrial machinery.

  • Strong mechanical engineering and fault‑finding skills.
  • Good electrical fault‑finding ability on industrial equipment, including sensors, motors, relays, contactors and control circuits.
  • Confidence working independently at customer sites without constant technical supervision.
  • Competent and safe use of hand tools, power tools and electrical test equipment.
  • Ability to understand and work from technical drawings and wiring diagrams.
  • A practical, methodical approach to fault diagnosis rather than simply replacing components.
  • Strong customer‑facing communication skills and a professional manner.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly throughout the UK, including occasional overnight stays.

Highly Desirable

  • The following experience would be advantageous:Packaging, processing, production‑line or automation machinery.
  • PLC fault‑finding and diagnostics.
  • Pneumatic systems, servo drives, variable‑speed drives, sensors and industrial control systems.
  • Commissioning new machinery or modifying existing production equipment.
  • Basic fabrication, machining or TIG welding.
  • This Role Will Suit An experienced service, maintenance, installation or commissioning engineer who enjoys solving practical machinery problems and wants greater responsibility within a growing business.You should be comfortable working independently, while also being willing to contribute to a small team where everyone gets involved.

This Role Will Not Suit

  • Candidates whose experience is primarily domestic, facilities or non-industrial maintenance, with limited exposure to production machinery.
  • Engineers who are uncomfortable with electrical fault‑finding or hands‑on mechanical work.
  • Applicants who do not want regular UK travel, customer‑site work or occasional overnight stays.
  • Candidates who require close day‑to‑day supervision to diagnose and complete engineering jobs.
