Linguistics and English Language within t he School of Social Sciences at Lancaster University seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Discourse Studies ( full-time, indefinite ). You will join the discipline of Linguistics and English Language , undertaking undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision, develop ing an innovative programme of research , and contribut ing to the wider academic life of the disciplin e through citizenship and leadership roles .

You will hold a PhD in Linguistics (or a cognate area) with a focus in the field of Discourse Studies. You will be able to demonstrate excellence in teaching , initially contributing to modules including Discourse Studies, Critical Discourse Studies , and Language and C reativity in Advertising . You will also provide evidence of a developing trajectory of innovative research through research publications , and plans for grant applications , and engagement and impact work . You will have a developing research profile or trajectory that shows innovation and exploration in the theory, methods or applications of discourse studies. You whose research advances cognitive, corpus or experimental approaches to discourse analysis or investigates multimodal communication, discourse in contemporary digital spaces , including discourses of gender and sexuality , and/ or discourse and AI are particularly encouraged to apply.

Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster , currently ranked #2 in the world for Linguistics (QS Subject Rankings 2026), is globally recognised for pioneering research in Discourse Studies. In this role, y ou would work closely with an existing team of colleagues to further develop and enhance our reputation in the area of Discourse Studies . You will have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues with interests in a variety of discourse areas including conflict and polarisation, health and the environment .

The School of Social Sciences brings together Linguistics and English Language with Criminology, Educational Research, Social Work, and Sociol o gy , providing the conditions for an inclusive, dynamic, and interdisciplinary research and teaching community.
