Lancaster University has significantly expanded its cyber security capabilities with an investment of £19m to hire the best and most creative academics to tackle a wide range of societal and technological security challenges. Building on our reputation as one of the UK’s largest cyber and data research communities, this investment is transforming our capacity and capability to deliver on our vision of international excellence in cyber security.

The School of Computing and Communications (SCC) is seeking to appoint a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer to support the delivery of our cyber education and to lead on the delivery of an exciting new online MSc Cyber Security programme. This is a full-time position for 36 months in the first instance. Applicants should be able to demonstrate a strong computer science and cyber security background, and excellence in teaching at university level. The ideal candidates will have strong programming and systems-related skills, as well as cyber security knowledge associated with the modules that are delivered in the programme.

We are particularly looking for candidates who are passionate about cyber security, online learning and widening diversity and inclusion in the discipline. It is anticipated that successful candidates will work closely alongside a lead academic for modules and a wider team that is supporting the delivery of courses. Duties will primarily include:

  • Supporting online students with assessments and tutorials
  • Delivery of modules in cyber security
  • Marking of coursework
  • Managing course content hosted on online learning platforms (e.g. Moodle)
  • Contributing to curriculum development where appropriate
  • Participating in teaching reviews and quality assurance processes

Some of these duties will need to be fulfilled outside of conventional office hours to support synchronous engagement with remote students during their anticipated study time, and hence flexibility in working hours will be required.

The School is committed to excellent research-led and problem-focused student learning. This has been recognised by our institutional award of TEF Gold. Furthermore, Lancaster University received the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Education, the nation’s highest education honour, for the pioneering work that was done in the School with the BBC micro:bit. SCC at Lancaster is noted for its balanced blend of hands-on practice (labs) and theory (lectures and workshops). We believe in a continuous process of teaching quality improvement and innovation.

Lancaster is the only university in the North West that has attained National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) recognition as an Academic Centre of Excellence for both Cyber Security Education (ACE-CSE) and Research (ACE-CSR), along with delivering an NCSC Certified Master’s Degree. SCC is committed to excellent research-led and problem-focused student learning and offers a range of degrees, including Computer Science, Cyber Security, Software Engineering and Data Science at undergraduate level, and MScs in Computer Science, Data Science, Cyber Security at postgraduate level.

The School maintains a good staff-student ratio: we’re currently home to around 50+ academic staff, 40 postdoctoral research staff, 120 PhD students and a combined undergraduate and taught master’s student population of approx. 1000. We are committed to creating a supportive, inclusive working environment.
