Job Overview

The appointment starts 1 August 2026 following the current HoD’s tenure ending 31 July 2026. This is a secondment in a senior leadership role within the Department. Applications are invited from academic colleagues within the Department of OWT. Applicants will normally be at professorial level, but Senior Lecturer or Senior Teaching Fellow levels are also welcomed.

Location: Bailrigg, Lancaster, UK

Salary: Senior Salary (Full time, fixed term)

Responsibilities:

  • Provide academic leadership for the Department; manage and develop the Department, its staff and its activities.
  • Represent the Department to the Faculty and the University.
  • Encourage and develop excellence in teaching, research and engagement across colleagues.
  • Invite and support formal appraisal and development plans for staff.
  • Work with the Dean and the Faculty to align departmental priorities with university strategy.
  • Make decisions on recruitment, appointments and promotions within the Department.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Existing member of academic staff within the Department of OWT with a contract of employment extending for at least four years upon appointment.
  • Typically, a professor; Senior Lecturer or Senior Teaching Fellow also welcome.
  • Demonstrated academic leadership experience and commitment to teaching, research and engagement.

Benefits:

  • Non‑superannuable salary supplement equivalent to one increment for professorial colleagues or two increments for Senior Lecturer/Senior Teaching Fellow colleagues.
  • Possibility of consolidating the allowance into salary on a permanent basis with successful performance.
  • Annual allowance for Head of Department that is non‑superannuable.

Sabbatical: HoDs are eligible, at the end of their period of office, to be considered for an additional term of sabbatical/AREL leave in agreement with the Dean.

Term of Office: The position is a four‑year secondment with potential renewal for a further secondment term within the University’s HoD and Associate Dean appointment process. On completion of the secondment(s), the HoD will revert automatically to their substantive position.
