Want to make a real difference for wildlife while getting out onto the moors? Join our Bog Squad for a rewarding day of scrub clearance on Darwen Moor, one of Lancashire’s iconic upland peatland landscapes.

Duration: Monday 19 January 2026 - Wednesday 21 January 2026

Commitment: Monday, Wednesday

You’ll be helping to remove encroaching scrub such as young willow and birch, which is spreading upslope onto the open moor. Left unmanaged, this scrub can damage fragile peat soils and create predator shadow corridors, putting ground-nesting birds at risk. By taking part, you’ll be directly supporting peatland restoration, protecting vital habitats and helping to keep our uplands open and wildlife-rich.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Helping to cut and remove young willow and birch scrub
  • Protecting peat soils and restoring open moorland habitat
  • Supporting breeding and ground-nesting birds

Whether you’re a seasoned conservation volunteer or completely new, we’ll provide all tools, training and expert support. The Lancashire Peat Partnership team will be with you throughout the day.

What to expect:

  • A rewarding, hands‑on conservation day with the Bog Squad
  • Expert guidance from our peatland restoration team
  • Stunning views across Lancashire’s uplands
  • The chance to make a tangible difference for peatlands and wildlife

What you’ll need:

  • To be 18 or over
  • A reasonable level of fitness (you’ll be working on uneven moorland terrain)
  • Suitable outdoor clothing and footwear for changeable weather
