The predicted salary is between 36000 - 60000 £ per year.

The post-holder will act as the Lead BMS for the direct delivery of the operational service of all areas of the Cellular Pathology department. This includes the communication of discipline specific expert technical advice to clinicians, laboratory staff, service users and external agencies.

The post holder will, along with other senior staff, be Quality Lead, responsible for the maintenance of Quality in line with UKAS standards. The post holder will allocate staff duties and lead BMS training and development. The post holder will ensure that safe working procedures are adopted. The post-holder will be expected to cover in the absence of other Lead BMS in Cellular Pathology and will deputise for the Pathology Network Professional lead.

The Cellular department includes a lot of specialist areas including Histology, Cytology, Neuropathology, Immunocytochemistry and Electron Microscopy. The department performs at a high standard and has an excellent work ethic. We are ISO accredited. The department encourages development of staff and training in all specialist areas.

Qualifications & Education

  • MSc or equivalent postgraduate qualification in Biomedical Science
  • Evidence of higher specialist training in Cellular Pathology gained through short courses or distance learning or equivalent experience.
  • Recognised management qualification at certificate or diploma level or equivalent experience.
  • Evidence of commitment to CPD
  • State registered BMS with HCPC

Knowledge & Experience

  • Up to date knowledge and extensive experience of Cellular Pathology
  • Substantial experience of supervising/managing a team
  • Evidence to support programme of personal and professional development.
  • Experience of information technology
  • Experience of highly specialised, complex analytical techniques
  • Evidence of procurement of specialised Cellular Pathology equipment
  • HR experience relating to recruitment and appraisals

Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrates ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner
  • Good team building and leadership skills
  • Ability to discuss and advise on highly complex information
  • Be competent in IT to provide workload and audit statistics
  • Ability to plan day to day for Cellular Pathology service and medium term for all technical aspects of the Cellular Pathology Service
  • Develop strategies to meet department objectives and workload demand
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Be able to tolerate frequent exposure to highly unpleasant Cellular Pathology specimens
  • Show good attention to detail, using specialised equipment
  • Ability to concentrate
