This is for a new Consultant post in Cellular Pathology which will be based at Royal Preston Hospital. This is a full time, permanent post. Working week will be Monday-Friday 9am to 5pm with no expectation of providing on call for this post. The successful applicant will join a team of consultants and would be required to provide a comprehensive histopathology service but will not be required to report neuropathology cases. You will be required to develop specialist interests to complement the existing specialist Cancer services.
Main duties of the job
- You will be expected to co-operate with other members of the Pathology Directorate to ensure effective administrative arrangements are made in the laboratory, which will include:
- Recruitment and appointment of junior medical staff, BMSs and secretarial staff having dealings with the histopathology department.
- The arrangement of rosters of staff, the allocation of duties to them and their instruction in necessary organisational matters.
- Co-ordination with staff in other professional disciplines and health care workers outside the hospital.
- Attendance at Board meetings and other committees when pathology issues are being discussed and to participate in resource management.
- Continuing management responsibility by agreement with other consultants in the Cellular Pathology Department, specifically for the service in his/her charge and for administrative duties associated with these services and the proper functioning of the department, though he/she may delegate certain responsibilities to the senior staff within the department.
Working for our organisation
We are in collaboration discussion with the other 3 trusts in Lancashire and Cumbria including Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust and Morecambe Bay Hospitals NHS Trust. A central laboratory Hub has been proposed. Modern Education Centres are based at both Royal Preston and Chorley and South Ribble Hospital sites and offer excellent library and study facilities, including PC/Internet support for staff and students as well as high tech simulation facilities. All new Consultants are actively encouraged to be research active and supported in every way to carry out research in this trust. All newly appointed substantive consultants are enrolled on the award-winning Consultant Leadership Programme and as part of that, mentorship is available. All consultants have annual appraisal with a trained appraiser and are supported with the revalidation process.

Essential criteria
- Full and specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview)
- MBChB or equivalent or evidence of equivalent qualifications
- FRCPath or evidence of equivalent qualification
- If an applicant is UK trained, they must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
- Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT/CESR
