The predicted salary is between 36000 - 60000 £ per year.

Applications are invited for a Trust senior clinical fellow ST4-8 equivalent post in Neonates. The post is for an initial period of 12 months. The successful candidate would be expected to work as a Tier 1 for neonatal services.

In addition to clinical responsibilities, they will have responsibilities for supervision, training, and education of junior team members. They are expected to assist the Consultant team in the day-to-day functioning of the neonatal unit and participate in relevant audits and governance arrangements. The post holder will not have commitments for general Paediatric services.

The clinical duties include routine and out-of-hours acute cover within Neonatal Services, based on a full shift system shared with ST1-3 and equivalent trainees. The neonatal unit shift system involves seven doctors with resident consultants covering some night shifts.

Summary of clinical duties:

  • Tier 1 out-of-hours on call duties for neonatal emergencies and babies requiring continued care on the NICU.
  • Performing NIPE (Newborn and Infant Physical Examination) on postnatal ward, including arranging referrals.
  • Reviewing babies on the postnatal ward and transitional care (TC) in liaison with Tier 2 and the on-call Consultant.
  • Attending deliveries and escalating care immediately to senior NICU medical staff.
  • Ward rounds in NICU with support from the senior medical team.
  • Attending outpatient clinics.
  • Participating in weekly departmental teaching sessions.

The Neonatal Directorate

The Newborn Services include acute cover for a 28-bed Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care unit, Delivery Suite, Preston Birthing Centre, and Postnatal wards housed in the Sharoe Green Unit at Royal Preston Hospital. Over the past 4 years, there have been an average of 4,500 births annually, with 80% in the Obstetric-led unit and 20% in Midwifery-led Birthing Centres or at home. NICU admission rates are 9% of live births.

The NICU has 14 acute cots (ICU or HD) and 14 Special Care cots, plus two en-suite parent rooms for Transitional Care. Additional Transitional Care services are provided on postnatal wards to facilitate mother-baby care.

The NICU offers all modalities of respiratory support, including HFOV, inhaled Nitric Oxide, CPAP, BiPAP, NIPPV, nHFOV, and high-flow humidified oxygen devices. We are one of two Level 3 NICUs in the Lancashire and South Cumbria Neonatal Network providing Therapeutic Hypothermia (Cooling). We participate actively in research and are a centre for several RCTs.
