Overview

The post-holder will be expected to participate in the neurology registrar on-call rota. The role includes undertaking outpatient work at Royal Preston Hospital and peripheral hospitals under consultant supervision, with potential cover for other outpatient clinics during periods of leave or sickness. The post provides opportunities to gain experience in clinical neurology in a supportive environment, with weekly clinical and academic meetings, case presentations and frequent clinical teaching. An educational supervisor will be allocated.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the neurology education lead to deliver high quality neurology education to medical students from the University of Manchester, based at Royal Preston Hospital.
  • Undertaking up to four outpatient clinics per week at Royal Preston Hospital and peripheral hospitals, under consultant supervision. There may be times you will be asked to provide cover for other outpatient clinics during periods of leave or sickness.
  • Manage inpatients in the regional neurology ward based at Royal Preston Hospital.
  • Participate in the neurology registrar on-call rota.

Additional context: The regional neurosciences service, based at The Royal Preston Hospital, includes Neurology, Neurophysiology, Neurosurgery and Neurorehabilitation, with links to Neuroradiology, Neuropsychology, Neuropathology and Paediatric Neurology, serving a catchment population of 1.6 million from Lancashire and South Cumbria. The Neurology Department has acute neurology and short-stay beds on Bleasdale Ward, a team including 9 Consultant Neurologists and neurology registrars, with a rotation through General Medicine. Regular outpatient clinics take place at Royal Preston Hospital and other hospitals in the region. Specialist Nurses support Neurology services for Parkinson’s Disease, Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Neuromuscular disorders and MND.

Qualifications / Requirements

  • Participation in clinical neurology activities under supervision and in a teaching environment.
  • Experience in outpatient and inpatient neurology settings preferred (as per posting).
