Are you a registered mental health nurse looking for a new opportunity to make a real difference to peoples experience of care and treatment during a mental health crisis? The Health Based Place of Safety Team, based at Dane Garth, Furness general hospital, Barrow in Furness, are looking for positive and compassionate nurses with excellent therapeutic engagement and assessment skills in supporting people experiencing acute distress.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a safe environment and care for people being detained under Section 136 of the MHA and being brought in by the Police for the purpose of a Mental Health Act Assessment.
  • Support a patient facing and person‑centred team working within a fast paced environment, supporting a myriad of presentations.
  • Ensure safe and appropriate assessment, care and treatment to those brought into the HBPoS.
  • Liaise with and work alongside a range of professionals and external agencies, including police, AMHPs, pharmacy and medical colleagues to facilitate the timely assessment of those detained in the HBPoS under the Mental Health Act.
  • Have a good understanding of the Mental Health Act and be comfortable making decisions in keeping with trust policies regarding medication, seclusion, observation levels and physical health monitoring.
  • Liaise with patients’ carers, family members and care teams/agencies.
  • Ensure all clinical and legal procedures and documentation are completed in line with Trust policy and MHA legislation.
  • Provide an overview of risk management, assess and monitor patients’ physical and mental health needs whilst in your care, create care plans and ensure peoples’ needs are met and their views heard.
  • Lead support staff colleagues and facilitate supervision within the supervision system to colleagues.
  • Support and work alongside inpatient ward units, mental health liaison, home‑based treatment team and initial response service when a patient is not admitted to the HBPoS suite.
  • Upon successful appointment, receive training in management of violence and aggression, reducing restrictive practice and managing deteriorating patients.
