Job overview

There are two posts available for either a Clinical/Counselling Psychologist or Senior CBT and/or EMDR Therapist to join the Lancashire and South Cumbria Traumatic Stress Service (LSCTSS).

The service is based in Chorley and is commissioned to support LSCFT staff whose trauma experiences are significantly impacting their mental health and well-being. The service provides comprehensive trauma-focused assessments as well as individually tailored psychological formulations and clear treatment plans for LSCFT colleagues requiring this support. The service also delivers preparatory and pharmacological interventions. The service has also developed an organisational framework to support staff following a critical incident (Workplace Trauma Support). In addition to the above the service also provides vital support across the organisation with training, consultation and supervision to colleagues in developing their knowledge, skills and confidence in working with trauma. The service also has strong links with local Doctorate Clinical Psychology Training courses, providing teaching and specialist placements for trainees.

Main duties of the job

LSCTSS provides opportunities for patients to engage with preparatory and resource development sessions while on the waiting list and they can also be seen by our pharmacist to review their medication. The service has developed a six-module treatment programme in relation to the treatment of complex trauma that emphasises the importance of ensuring that the patient is stable, safe and secure before directly addressing the trauma memory.

The expectation is that the post holder will provide specialist psychological assessment and therapy for LSCFT staff who have experienced trauma. The post-holder will also be expected to attend team meetings and case discussion forums. The skilled provision of evidence based psychological interventions for a range of presentations, which will include specialised trauma focused interventions, will be an essential aspect of the post.

The service provides robust clinical and peer supervision as well as staff well-being initiatives. The post holder will also have the opportunity to contribute to consultation, training, resource development and research.

PLEASE NOTE:
You must have worked or are working in a clinically aligned service that delivers evidence-based trauma-focused interventions such as Trauma-Focused CBT and EMDR.

Essential criteria

  • Ability to work and communicate effectively in a highly emotive or hostile atmosphere, and to overcome barriers to acceptance/psychological resistance to potentially threatening information.
  • Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate, to support and maintain clinical practice.
  • Ability to teach and train others, using a variety of complex multi-media materials suitable for presentations within public, professional and academic settings.

Education / Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Either HCPC Registered, BABCP Registered or BACP Registered or an equivalent body e.g. UKCP.
  • Either Doctoral level or equivalent training in clinical/counselling psychology, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology, as accredited by the BPS.
  • Or Core professional qualification and experience together with a postgraduate diploma in CBT.
  • Or Psychotherapist registered with appropriate body e.g. UKCP and experience of use of evidence based psychological models within adult mental health.

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria

  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised therapeutic intervention.
  • Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health; knowledge of safeguarding procedures.
  • Skills in the use of specialist methods of psychological assessment, formulation and intervention.
  • Skills in providing advice to other professional and non-professional groups.

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
  • Experience and knowledge of issues relating to inclusivity and diversity.
