About the Job

The Grounds Maintenance Operative Driver plays a key part in the delivery of the specification across a range of sites within the Parks and Open spaces portfolio. You will undertake a full range of grounds maintenance tasks as directed by the management team and be responsible for ensuring communal gardens, grounds areas, parks, open spaces, cemeteries and allotments are kept to our high service standards and delivered in time with the schedule.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work effectively as part of the Resident Services team, delivering corporate objectives through the work of the department.
  • Grass cutting using pedestrian and ride on mowing equipment, petrol powered grass trimmers and back pack blowers.
  • Green waste clearance including leaves and other arisings using back pack or hand held blowers and hand tools such as leaf grabbers and pitch forks.
  • All forms of shrub, flower beds, herbaceous beds and hedge maintenance, using both powered and manual horticultural practices, or hand tools such as pruning shears/loppers.
  • Weeding using mechanical devices and by hand, removal of weeds and litter from beds, plant containers, pathways and grassed areas.
  • Tree maintenance including: pruning and removal of epicormic growth, crown lifting using pole saws, tree inspections, small tree maintenance, felling and planting.
  • Planting of shrubs, trees and bedding plants including and the watering of plants, trees, beds and plant containers.
  • Use of chippers and shredders for mulching.
  • Hard and soft landscaping including turf maintenance, digging and mulching.
  • The collection and removal of waste arising from such activities.
  • Transportation to site of large equipment by means of a trailer (if relevant license held).
  • Assist in the preparation and maintenance of sports pitches, including line marking, erection and dismantling of sports equipment.
  • Use of ladders to work at height where required and acceptable to do so.
  • Equipment care and maintenance including working with petrol powered grounds machinery, carrying out pre-start checks and undertaking any necessary training required to use such machines.
  • Safe application and transport of chemicals and herbicides in accordance with current environmental legislation (if suitably trained and qualified to do so).
  • Maintain an assigned company vehicle in a clean, tidy and presentable condition at all times.
  • Take ownership and complete general maintenance/cleaning tasks for hand tools and equipment as required.

Experience and Qualifications Required:

  • Educated to GCSE standards, including English and Maths as a minimum.
  • Full UK driving License.

Desirable Education and Qualifications:

  • B+E Entitlement on Driving licence.
  • PA1/PA6 Herbicide application licence.
  • N.V.Q / Q.C.F Level 1-2 Horticulture or City and Guilds levels 1 & 2.
  • CS30.1 and CS30.2 Chain Saw Maintenance, Cross cutting and felling small trees.
  • N.V.Q use of Pole Saws.
  • First Aid at Work Certificate.
  • Manual Handling.
  • Level One Health and Safety.

Previous Experience and Skills Required:

  • Experience of operating a range of Grounds Maintenance machinery.
  • Understanding of Health and Safety pertaining to working required machinery and operating in a public area.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety and C.O.S.H.H in relation to Grounds Maintenance.
  • Good knowledge of the local area.
  • A basic understanding of the Countryside and Wildlife Act.
  • Knowledge of relevant environmental legislation and associated policies.
  • Good communication skills – both written and oral.
