Lakeside Healthcare is looking for a motivated and organised General Practice Assistant (GPA) to join our Oundle team, a member of Rockingham Forest PCN. This varied role combines clinical and administrative responsibilities, supporting GPs and other healthcare professionals with patient care, medication reviews, clinical observations, blood tests, care coordination, and practice administration. Working at the heart of the multidisciplinary team, you will help ensure patients receive timely, safe, and effective care while improving the efficiency of clinical services. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience in primary care who enjoys working directly with patients, has strong organisational skills and is committed to delivering a patient-centred approach to healthcare. Training and development opportunities will be available, including support towards the General Practice Assistant qualification where required.

Main duties of the job

  • Support GPs and healthcare professionals with clinical and administrative tasks.
  • Prepare patients for consultations by gathering information and undertaking basic clinical observations where appropriate.
  • Assist with treatment room activities, including phlebotomy (blood tests), wound care, immunisations, and sample collection.
  • Coordinate medication review processes, ensuring patients receive the required monitoring, investigations, and follow-up appointments.
  • Arrange appointments, referrals, tests, and onward care to support efficient patient pathways.
  • Communicate with patients, carers, and external healthcare organisations to support continuity of care.
  • Provide information and reassurance to patients, explaining procedures and helping them understand next steps in their care.
  • Support quality improvement initiatives through accurate clinical coding, audits, and data management.
  • Help identify and signpost patients to the most appropriate services within the NHS and local community.

Rockingham Forest PCN is a large, forward-thinking Primary Care Network comprising three practices across Corby, Kettering and Oundle covering a population of approximately 67,000 patients. This role is based primarily in Oundle; however, it may require some travel across the PCNs Lakeside surgeries in Corby and Kettering. Our aim is to provide exemplary patient care, finding innovative solutions in general practice to deliver the best care we can to our patients.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will support the smooth running of clinics by performing routine tasks, both clinical and administrative, on behalf of the GPs and other health practitioners within the surgery.

Person Specification

Experience

  • Demonstrable experience of administration work.
  • Demonstrable experience of working in a public facing role.
  • 1 year experience working within primary care.
  • Experience of working with clinical systems, databases or patient records systems.
  • Experience of working effectively in a team environment.
  • Experience of working with SystmOne clinical system.
  • Experience of data entry and coding.
  • Sound knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Experience of working with patient centred care plans.
  • Phlebotomy qualification and recent practical experience.

Qualifications

  • Educated to GCSE level in Maths/English, grade C or above.
  • General Practice Assistant Certificate, or willingness to work towards this.
  • Qualified in Phlebotomy, ECG, Patient Health Checks, Blood Pressure Measuring.
  • Basic First Aid knowledge.

Disclosure and Barring Service Check

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.

£12.71 to £12.85 an hour, dependent on experience.
